London, Dec. 18.— The w ar office has
received a disjiateh announcing th a t
G eneral B uller has m et w ith serious re
verse, losing 11 guns. G eneral B uller
wras attem pting to cross the Tugela
river. F inding it im possible to effect
his object, he ordered a retirem ent in
order to avoid greater losses. He left
11 guns behind.
The following is the te x t of G eneral
B uller’s dispatch announcing the re
verse:
“ B uller to Lansdowne: Chevely
Camp, Dec. 18.— I regret to report a
serious reverse.
I moved in full
strength from our cam p near Chevely
a t 4 o ’clock th is m orning. There are
tw o fordable places in the Tugela river,
and it w as my intention to force a pas
sage through a t one of them . They are
about two m iles apart. My intention
w’as to force one or the other w ith one
brigade, supported by a central brigade.
G eneral H art was to attack the left
d rift, General H ildyard the rig h t road,
and G eneral L ittleto n was to take the
center and to support either.
“ E arly in the day I saw th a t General
H art w ould not l)e able to force a pas
sage, and I directed him to w ithdraw .
He had, however, attacked w’ith srreat
g allan try , and his leading battalion,
the Connaught rangers, I fear, suffered
a great deal. Colonel I. G. Brooke
was seriosly w ounded.
“ W'e have abandoned 10 guns and
lost by shell-fire one. The losses in
G eneral H u n t’s brigade are, I fear, very
h e a v y ,. although the proportion of
severely wounded, I hope, is not large.
The F ourteenth and S ixty-ninth field
batteries also suffered severe losses.
“ W e have retired to our cam p a t
C hevely.”
