horsepow er) and will be installed by
the For<^ Motor Company in the power
statio n at its River Rouge P lant,
Fordson, Michigan. I t rep resents the
last word ip -up-to-date g enerating
equipm ent, its electric o utput fa r
exceeding the fa tin g of any existing
prime m overrused fo r industrial p u r
poses.

equivalent to approxim ately 885 Ford
sedans, yet the floor space which it
occupies would provide parking space

every 24 hours and only E instein
could figure out how many Fords it
would take to use up th a t much w ater
in a day.
‘ One of the im p o rtan t fe a tu re s of
the d esig n —of p articu lar value in the
Ford plant, where floor space is a t a
prem ium — is the small am ount of
space which will be taken up by this
new power unit. The general dim en
sions are 57 Me feet long by 23 fe e t
wide and 21 feet overall height. The
space occupied is less th an a q u a rte r
or a foot per kilow att of output which
is approxim ately the same am ount of
floor space occupied by two older
units which it will supplant and which
together, only produced 25,000 kilo
w atts, or less th an one-fourth of the
production of the new generator.

A uniform accounting system is
one of the reform s recom m ended by
the state tax investigation com-

one, it would be a much easier m a tte r
fo r art au d ito r to discover w eaknesses
in the accounts and m ight be the
means of saving the cities many
thousands of dollars. One thing th at
ought to e n te r into all municipal
bookeeping is the account of all m un
icipal utilities in the same way th at
a private corporation would keep such
accounts. Such utilities also should
pay taxes in all units of governm ent
except the one th a t owns them. For
instance, the city of Corvallis owns
its own w ater system. W hen it took
w er the private com pany it removed
from the tax rolls th a t much w ealth.
T h a t’s all r.g h t so fa r as Corvallis is
concerned. If it w ants to exem pt the
w ater-com pany, it owns, all right, but
the county, school d istrict and state
should receive taxes from this invest
m ent. The fa c t th a t th ere are h u n
dreds of such utilities owned by city,
county and state all escaping taxation,
makes farm taxes, and other taxes

form a p a rt as a state highw ay. This
can only be done by action of the
S ta te Legislature.

Is it not possible to g et legislation
enacted fo r the construction of the
M aryhill bridge contingent on the
S tates of Oregon and W ashington
m aking the necessary connection of
the highw ay system s of the two
states? The south end of the bridge
would a b u t on the Columbia River
Highway a t the north end of the
Sherm an highway, b u t it would re
quire a connection of about two miles
in this sta te as the survey of S tate
Road No. 8 is on the first bench above
the Columbia river.
If some way is not found to over
come the present difficulty on ac
co unt of not having a connection
betw een the two highway system s, it
will delay the construction of a free
bridge for several years.

Miss Coles' first and second grade
room had perfect attendance last
week. There were five students who
came to school late Tuesday and Wed
nesday, making the first tardy marks
of the school since October 17. Par

The significance of the fact th a t a t
least 15 per cent of all of the power
generated by central stations th ro u g h
out the U nited S tates is “ lost” som e
where betw een the pow er house and
the custom ers’ m eters is little under
stood. A ccording to the bureau of
the census, there was available fo r
distribution in the U nited S tates d u r
ing the year 1927 more than 104
billion kilow att hours, y e t according
to the figures of the statistical r e
search d epartm ent of the N ational
E lectric Light association, only a little
more than 89 billion reached the ulti
m ate consumers.
This loss yi-wenergy during tra n s
mission is som ething which is in h er
ent in ” the generation of electricity,
and as yet electrical engineers have
apparently been unable to overcome
it. It means how ever th a t every cen
tral station must be equipped to g en
erate more actual kilow att hours th an
it can possibly deliver to its custom
ers and th a t out of every 100 kilo
w att hours it g enerates an average of
at least 15 will disappear, ju st as in a
carload of fru it or vegetables th ere
will be a certain percentage of spoil
age in transit.

taking the average fo r the whole

buys 100 kilow att hours there m ust
be generated a t the pow er station

exactly the same as when he goes to
the m eat m arket fo r a five pound
coast. If he buys a five pound roast
he doesn’t g et five pounds of m eat,
or, if he w ants five pounds of m eat
his roast will w eight more than five
pounds.
Looking a t this situation from the
standpoint of rates, if the consum er
is paying, for exam ple, 6 cents a
kilow att hour, his bill fo r 100
kilow att hours is $6.00.
B ut the
com pany has actually gen erated fo r
him 117 Vi kilow att hours— fo r which
it receives $6.00— and th erefo re in
stead of receiving 6 cents fo r a unit
o f its product it actually receives
only 6.1 cents.
