of the Caterpillar Magaxine shows,
in a series of photographs, the story
of one of our industrial romances—
that of the tractor.
4
v
The track type tractor's efficiency
for any kind of “rough-and-ready use
first came to the world’s attention
during the war, when it hauled guns
through mud and over precipitous
mountains, and swept, in the role of
a tank—“a caterpillar with a tin
hat”—across trenches and entangle
ments. That was its .war work. And
then, back from the war, with hat and
coat off, it went to work and has
proven invaluable in time of peace.
Many of the boys who a few years
ago were guiding a slush spattered,
death dealing tank through the battle
fields of France are today directing
its peaceful brother while it builds
roads through once impassable terri
tory, or moves tons of machinery to a
new power plant orafactory, or accom
plishes hundreds of other hard tasks.
The modern farmer in this country
has learned the value of the tractor,
as one of the greatest of progressive
agricultural steps, comparable to the
invention of the cotton gin and com
bined harvester." And all over the
world this strictly American product
has been received with the same en
thusiasm and for a multitude of uses.
It cultivates the rice fields of Japan,
works on sugar-land in British Gui
ana, builds roads in Uruguay, makes
a golf course in England, and in
Hawaii clears acres of cactus covered
land, once useless, to make way for
pineapple planting.
The Caterpillar tractor is an Amer
ican commodity with a world story
and an international romance.
This week the Sherman County Ob
server prints in full the new reduced
rates put in force this month by the
Sherman Electric Company on all its
lines in Sherman, Gilliam and Morrow
counties.
The new rates are very much lower
than those formerly in force in this
territory. This will be particularly
noticable in the reduced minimum
charge which in most cases have been
reduced half for all lighting service.
A second noticable reduction is the
power rate« which was formerly based
on a charge for horsepower installed
and then an additional charge for all
current used.
