David cam e back to the gate. “Now,

“If you can’t get any with your sw eet
sm ile, how do you suppose I’m going
to work It?”
7 “Scat, silly boy I” retorted Nannie,
laughing. “Fve got too much to do to
fool w ith you. D on’t dare-com e home
’ tonight without som e sugar." *•
David threw her a kiss, and went off
down the street w histling, and Nannie
looked after him with pride. He wus
a nice hoy. in sp ite o f his nonsense,
mid she did so hope he could get som e
sugar. H is birthday w as tomorrow,
and David hud a lw ays hud a birthday
cake.
She went Into the house with a little
sigh, and stopped long enough in the
parlor to peek through the window nt
the house next door. It had recently
been rented, and N annie w as curious
about the people In It. F irst o f all
there w as a girl about her own nge
or perhaps a little older— possibly 2*»
— then a young man who walked with
a limp. He wore a service button In
his coat, and ^Nannie admired him
- very much. David had com e through
S t. Mliiiel and a few other places
w ithout a scratch, hut this chap had
evid en tly had a hard tim e o f It. H e
w as thin and pale, and N annie s moth­
erly heart yearned for him. L ast o f
a ll, there w as an elderly lady, and
from her devotion to the young man,
N an n ie Judged she w as h is mother.
But D avid's search for sugar w as
u n su ccessfu l. He cam e up the walk
thnt night, holding out his empty
hands, and'shrugged his shoulders.
