A special train of twenty six cars
loaded with 154 auto trucks valued,
at $80,000 was received on the
coast this week. They w ill be dis
tributed in the (states of Oregon,
Washington and California and
comprise the largest shipment of
purely commercial power driven
machines ever made.
From the interest shown in the
O. W . R. & N. Co’s com contest,
it appears that Oregon w ill become
a big corn producing state. More
than five tons of selected seed
corn, enough to plant l,0<)0 acres,
has been distributed free of charge
by the company, while the South
ern Pacific has distributed more
than two tons additional.

The first through cut of the
Panama Canal from east to west
was completed May 24th. when
two steam shovels working from
opposite directions met at Cule
bra. W ith the meeting of these
great steam shovels the canal was
opened at grade from ocean to
ocean. There is still to be ex
cavated in broadehing the canal
about 8,000,000 cubic yards of
earth which is being removed at
tbe rate of 2,500,000 yards a month.
Canal cost to date is $290,110,000.

stirred last Friday night when it
became known that, for reasons
unknown, Jamies G. Huis had died
by bis own band ,at jh e family
home east of. M o ro .

wife, Mrs. Grace Thompsondduls,
was at her parents home, but a
short distance away; his mother
was at the bedlgde of sick daughter

and married sister. Mrs. A llie Huis

The tragedy had evidently taken
place somewhere in the neighbor
hood o f sevens o ’clock as he had
