Oaa of The Senseless Criticisms.
After copying remarks of The
Observer last week on the exhibit
of farm products made by M oro
Dry Farm Station at the Sherman
County Fair, the Condon Times
ad d s: ,
“ N ow our land over here is just
as good as the land on the Experi­
mental Farm, but it is not of record
that any of it produced within 15
bushels of what wheat was raised
on the Experimental Farm. Of
course this wheat was raised over
there on small acreage and got ex­
ceptional care, but it shows what
may be done with thorough culti­
vation; we may not be able to do as
well as what has been accomplish­
ed on the Experimental Farm, but
we should, with good farming, be
able to com e within 10 bushels of
it, apyway.
But this we never will accomplish
with every man trying to farm
about three times as much land as
he can handle ; especially is this a
fact where a farmer has half a sec­
tion of his own land and branches
out with a thousand acres o f rent­
ed land ; the excuse is that he has
the stock and might as well find
work for them. If this man put all
of his time on his own land there
is no reason to doubt he could
have it as well farmed as the 35
bushels per acre of Turkey-red on
the Experimental Farm, and if his
stock are a burden he had better
sell some of them and get down
to where he has ample horses to
farm his own land and let rented
land alone.
The renting system is a failure,
both for the man who rents, and
the owner of the land ; this is be­
ing found out^jrt last, and many a
farmer fs taking his farm up from
the renter, or the renter has given
it up as a bad job, and gone to the
making of a living in some other
way.
W e are on the eve o f different
methods in this country and peo­
ple are finding, that they must get
down to cases and cease scratching
over large tracts of land and tak­
ing the chance of a good year to
give them a crop anyway. W e
do not deny that men who own
large tracts of land and have am­
ple means and plenty of stock to
work it. are all right; but these are
few and far between, and even in
this class there has been very near
to failure this year.
W e have a fine prospect at the
present time for a good crop next
year, and those who had the lane
properly summer fallowed may be
reasonably sure of one. Hundreds
of acres are being double-diskec
and sown to wheat and the plan
may work, with the amount o
moisture we had last month, but
when all is said and done the sum
mer fallow and fall sowing is most
promising in parts of Gilliam.
G ov. W ilson, of N ew Jersey,
feels his sense of the fitness o f s o n g
outraged by The Beautiful Isle of
Somewhere, which he character­
izes as silly, without poetry, sense
“or anything.”
It is the fate o f so many songs,
secular and religious, that fetch the
emotions keenly by their plaintive
rhythm, or by som e wild note of
yearning, to be linked with words
that indicate intellectual tenuity.
It seems to be beyond help ; the
musician and the poet so seldom
dwell together under the same h a t;
in fact music has nothing to do
with w ord s; it spurns them. All
the Suwanee River has to say, it
conveys to the ear and the heart,
without the alphabet; there must
be syllables, so there are verses in
the Suwanee River, but how inad­
equate.

in its m elody is exquisite ; the hear­
er and the singer drift away on its
chorus as lightly as thistle down ;
its joyous notes bid. farewell to
care; grief takes w ings; the song
itself seems winging aloft in the
atmosphere o f bliss. These are
the articulated accompaniment to

land on a visit. Sunday evening
as she was passing from St Johns

en and fell in a faint on the floor

lege, will give lectures
demonstrations on Livestock,
Grain, Poultry, Forage Plants, Conservation of moisture,
