Read aid Remember. .
Don’t be so free with your abréviations. “Port” is not
a contraction for Portland; and when you address a letter
“Da,le#,” it is more likely to reach Dallas, in Polk county,
than it is to go where you intended, perhaps, as there is
no Dalles.
Write it The Dalles; or more properly, Dalles
City, Oregon.
When you address your letters or cards with a lead
pencil see to it that the address is plainly written. You
had better use a fountain pen—at least pen of some kind,
and ink. Most lost letters are improperly addressed.
When you address a letter see that you spell the name
of the town correctly. Many postoffices have similar names.
Don t write Ciu. for Cincinnati, or Col. for Columbus.

stamp and post mark in the upper right band corner. Post
marks often blur your address.

registered mail, for the post office department will make
good any loss in this mail not exceeding $2>5.
Patrons of post offices can get better service b y rent
ing a box which costs only 20 cents for three months. If
you have a box the post master’s work is4j.ghtened, and
your mail is not handled or looked over like it is in the
general delivery. The post office department makes great
conveniences for you, so do not hesitate to help in return.
When you mail a letter or package see that it is sub
stantially done up. The rapid handling of the mails some
times destroys a poor envelope or covering of a package,
and thus your mail is lost.
You should put your name and post office on each
package, and if not delivered it will be returned to you,
but you will have to repay postage, unless it is first class.
When you moye to another post office notify the post*
master at ÿour former post office to forward your mail, and
notify the publishers of your papers that you have changed
