WOMAN AND HER MIGHTS.
AJÍ OPE» COLUMBIA HIVER.
Extract from Mr. Bvwtrman’a
Mitchell add res«: During my Uftn
of office, which is now juat ck e ug,
I have worked diligently bc«h in
the legislature and out of it, for an
open Columbia river. I was« mem
ber of tire Oju'o River Aarociatiea
which raised money to complete the
portage road. A T e r li t « st-iLe a | •

I introduced, and hud po-n-d thru
the legislature, a resolntiou en-ati: g

the report of this committee, with
other members from Eastern Oregon
I secured the state appropriation of
$25,000 to be uaetl for operating ti e
road. Had not this appropriation
been granted, the road could not
have been operated more than a
month or so after it was completed,
and the sum of more than $200,000
which was invested in the road
would have been an absolute loss.
During the session of 1905, and also
the aeration of 1907, we secured the
passage through the senate of a bill
making further appropriation for
the purpose of completing the road
into Dalles city, but these bills fail
od in the house each time, for the
lack of just one vote. When the
road is completed into The Dalles,
is I believe it will be, freight on all
products from this part of Oregon
will be reduced materially, aud a
great deal uiore business will be
transacted by the portage. Under
the present arrangement there are
no competing boat lines connecting
with the portage at the lower end,
but when the road is completed to
The Dalles three competing linei
ill connect. The use of iodine
cars will also lie done away with
and frdght will be handled direct
from the portage cars to the boats.
