The Portland park commissioners
begin to realise that it is time to se
cure a few animals from the jungles
of the Pacifio Northwest, and let up
on wasting money on cast off bric-a-
back birds and beasts from other
countries. *
Wheat touched a low point on
the 16th in Chicago, selling under
70c for the first time in over four
years. The market was influenced
by lower cables and continued ex
cellent weather for harvesting in
Minnesota and Dakota.
Mr. Nelson, of the Trunk Line Ry
building up DesChutes river is very
greatly pleased with Prineville. An
inland town that handles 20,000,000
pounds of freight annually by wag
on, ought to look good to an Up to
date railway traffic manager.
Stanley Webb, at his old home io
Wieconeiu, sends regards to all in-~
quiring friends. He has been trav
eling a year for bis health and feels
that he has considerably improved.
The region of his boyhood days is
now dotted with creameries, and
farmers are rioh from prices obtain
ed from butter alone.
San Francisoo has so much cash
that it don’t know what to do with
it at home, and so is sending It to
N.Y.City to loan (where interest is
cheap). Notwithstanding the insur
ance muddle 91,000,000 per day is
now coming in on account of losses,
and this has been going on for near
ly two months.
Dr. Sanders visited Hood River
valley recently and came home de
lighted. He says the rondn are good
with only an exception or two. He
was not looking after sick horses,
and refusing to be interviewed, with
merry twinkle in his eye— we
draw our own conclusions.
Musk melons with deep furrows
and rough eurfsoes are sound and
sweet. The color in the furrows is
also worth noting. If very greeny
green, it is under ripe; yellow, Htld
it is apt to be mnshy. Very smooth
snrface often raeank that the melon
is over ripe. It may be sweet, but
it will be too soft and dry for per
fection. Io choosing a watermelon

it Is sound. The test of weight and.
fragrance are good ones for fruit« of
many vafieties.
Justin Clark, a busy farmer near
Spokane, realised 91,000 per acre
this summer from dewberries. Alb
sold in the Spokane market. Not
having all oreation fqr a patch he
was able to do all the pisking and
orating himself, hence had no ex-
pdfcee obtside of boxes, leaving al
most all he received for the berries
as clear profit. Besides dewberries
he has two aorys of tomatoes which
are a heavy orop this year, and an
orohard of 45 peaoh trees, which
will he in bearing next year.

Sherman county farmers are far
from being broke. The crop of grain
in short, but our citizens are ’‘still
in the ring,” financially.
A moderu sign in Canyonville
reads thus “Teeth pulled and sub
scriptions taken for the Spokes
man.” Strange; isn’t it.
G. F. Guinther owned the team
advertised in The Observer as taken
up by Father J. R. Martin. It pays
both ways to advertise in The Old
Reliable. Fred got his horses.
Walter Wellman throws up the
sponge, we thought he would do so,
and will not sail toward the north
pole in his halloo.
’Tie well,
Walter; if you’d continue a well
man?
Mark Collins and wife of Tygb,.
will have to get busy and clean up,
build a decent home and take a
bath, before they get (heir four
pretty children out of the boys and
girls orphanage.
J. A. Thompson is at home again
from a flying visit to Canada.- He
was some time at Brucefleld, Ontar
io, the home of Mrs. Frank Smith’s
people, the Mathesons, where Mr.
and Mrs. Smith expect to winter.
A man was taken to the Dalles
from Olex last week suffering from
puerpa hemorrhngia, the second case
of the disease ever known in the
northwest. The first one was re
ported io Walla Walla recently and
resulted fatally. It is blood oozing
from the membrane all over the
body.
Capt. Spencer qhows up the open
river negligences and Asserts that
the finest opportunities for work on
the upper Columbia and Snake have
been allowed to go by through club
tactics. He says a more appropri
ate name for them would be a
Closed River Crowd.
Steeve Meek, brother of Joe,
whose name appears in an editorial
today in The Observer, was paid
two cows by the immigrants whom
he lost in 1845 in the Oregon wil
derness of now Harney county. To
eave bis neck he sneaked back to
old Fort Boise, and the immigrants
were too famished to follow him.
The new proprietors at Morp
Pharmacy, Dr. Goffin and Ladru
Barnum, are nowr prepared to serve
the public of Sherman county better
than the community has ever been,
served before since the first settle
ments. It may be dull times and
all that, bnt Moro Phurmacy has
taken many papes in advance of
the ti'mes quite recently.
Geo. P. Sink was a busy man in
Moro for an hour or so oh the 17th.
Mr.-Sink represents the better part
of Gilliam, and in answer as to the
crops told us that from the most re
liable information he could gather
tbfi crop of that county will not fall
short to exceed one-third, possibly
forty to fifty per cent in some local
ities, but in others the shortage will
amount to hut a small per ceut.
J. A. McNeil, combined harves
ter expert with the L. V. Moore ma
chine, was a caller at the Observer
office Wednesday. He reports that
Mr.Moore has his crop off 500acres
in the sack, doing the work in 15
days including stops for repairs and
niovek An average of 9 sacks was
made off 200 acreB. The machine
will now proceed to cut and sack
the crop off 500 acres for Robert
Kaseberg and W. F. Jackson.
A meeting has been called of the
Department of School Superintend
ence, an organization of county and
city superintendents, anil teachers,
to meet at Salem on October 5th
and 6tb. This being the last yeur
of the present school hook contract
the meeting will discuss needed
school book change* and otlirt’ pro
posed legislation affecting schools.
W. C Bo Hot. superintendent for
this county, will attend.
A stranger drops into town and
goes to nailing up yellow tin signs
indiscriminately. Is there not some
wav to stop this nuisaifc«? Tin pla
cards nrnounoe that Horsetail is
the best smoke in the world. »The
man with the long handled tack
hammer sticks them up on barns,
steps, poles, hitching posts, any old
place. The signs get old, discolored
unsightly, and worse looking as the
years roll by. Is there no way to
protect the city against these adver
tising monstrosities? Generally the
stuff they advertise is not fit for use.
An itinerating spectacle vendor
named Nobel, made his appearance
in Moro Monday but he didn’t stay.
He found Mr. lleacock
much bet
ter prepared for the work that his
bluff cut no ioe. The stand we take
in such matters is: If the tramp is
what be represents himself to be, in
oases like this, he would settle down
somewhere to steady business. If
he is not, push him out; because
Mr. lleacock is n bona fide citizen
amongst us and deserves the trade.
The same rule applies to tramp
i typewriter supplies, printing, eto.

ty, a nephew of Mrs. J. H. Landry,

harvest.
With a lively runaway, a rain
storm and a fire alarm, all within
an hour, Moro was quite active last
Tuesday afternoon.
Mr and Mrs Freeman and Mrs
OA Ramsey are in camp at Rohr
