The young mau at the window cast a comprehensive glance around. The mail hour waa about over, a n d o o ly stragglers were at their late lunch. He pressed close to the window and eager ly eyed the girl within, his bold, ad miring look taking In the amooth, ahln- lug bra Ida of hair, the sensitive mouth, the downcast eyes fluttering under the long lashes. "Judith," he said In a low tone, "come down to The beach with me tonight and see the new sbQW open, and we will have a late supper and come back on the boat?’ A deep flush mounted to Judith’s forehead. She laid bills and sliver change on the llttlo marble counter and shoved them toward him without look-' lng up. "Teu, five, two twos and 75 coats. No, thank you, Mr. Lauderdale.” "Why, not, Judith?” The girl cast a hurried glance around, as If looking for help. The giggling of the girls at their lunch near her desk came to her, and she knew that the proprietor was observing It all under his discreetly lowered eyelids only a few feet away. Judith’s heart gave a great thump. Then she looked square ly at her tormentor and said: "Mr. Lauderdale, I will not go out with you, and you know It. This sntirlsy hid ths river, and attem pt ing to cross on what they supposed was solid ground the cattle would break through and pitch head first into the river. That was ths last seen of them. John Ryan had men out watohing hia stock, but six head succeeded in getting in, but were rescued. The old grizzly bear that for 18 years has made a pilgrimage through these parts saoh spring has recently passed through this sec tion. Tom Ryan reports he saw tracks of the old fellow and where he slept in the hay at the Donkle place up at The Meadows. The tracks measured seven inches in width and 13 inches long. Brock, Howell and Triplett took Brock’s hounds and started out to get the bear if possible. From the Donkle place he headed north east, and the hunters started for the ice caves oountry in hopes of heading him off or at least crossing his trail. They took blankets and provision with them and if the trail is at all fresh, they intend to stay with it until they bag the bear or the bear absolutely bags them. John Sise- more says this grizzly has Crossed ths river, in this region, twice each year for 18 years. He is always alone, and as far as any one knows seems to be a natural outlaw among the bear tribe. J. W. MESS1NGER& SON PIO N EER .B R IC K , M ORO, OREGON.
