A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY LOST T he unit o f value in the Peruvian monetirry system hitherto has been the sol, a silver coin containing the same amount of silver as the dollar of the 1 nited States. W illiam E. C urtis, in one of his letters to the Chicago Record, points out that in m aking the change from tlie silver to the gold standard P eru has also substituted the British for the A m eri can unit of value. T h e sol, which corresponded originally w ith the dollar o f the U nited States, is to give place to the libre, equivalent in value to the E nglish pound sterling. • • • Presum ably the Peruvians in changing their m onetary system adopt tiie unit o f value o f Great Britain because the larger part of their trade is with that country. T he fact that London is the clearing house tor South A m erica is doubtless another reason w hy the Peruvians chose the British unit of value as the basis for monetary calculations. • • • France ought to have an E agan capable of telling Mercier how many kinds o f a liar he is.
