The slow growth of Morton’s new party move is attributed to the back ward spring in all parts ol the United States. Enterprising citizens of Delaware have succeeded in stealing a brewery but couldn’t elect a United States senator. Brig. Gen. Fred Funston a pop.? Great Scott! what will the Oregon ian do about it? Just think of a man being a hero, and a patriot, and a populist. Texas law protects a creditor from paying a bill to any trust—and so any trust will »ell to Texas buyers, for «ash belore delivery’ of the goods. Thotmes I, who reigned in Egypt and built fleets on the Euphrates 35 centuries ago is now a museum cu riosity. Perhaps the later and wiser Egyptians purposely forgot their art • f embalming. The Holt Manufacturing Compa ny, Stockton, California, manufactur ers of the well know*n Holt Bros. Side-hill Combined-harvesters, which have made such a change in harvest ing methods in this country during the last few years, report extremely large sales of their machines in Cali fornia and expect to do a large busi ness in Oregon and Washington this season and have already several or ders for this year’s delivery. They have made several changes in their Side-hill harvester, which they build especially for Oregon and Washing ton. The machine has been streng thened and enlarged in several points where experience in harvesting the extreme heavy crops grown in this eountry has shown necessary to do •o. The swing frames have been made much stronger and the new atyle of tipping device, which was tried for the first time last year, and which allows the machine to level-up ©n a third steeper hill than the de vice formerly used, has been improv ed and strengthened. The machine has been made longer and higher •ver the straw carrier, so as to enable the machine to separate the grain from the large amount of straw in digenous to this country. The Side- hill Combined-harvester is a great boon, particularly to the Oregon and Washington farmers, as it enables them to harvest their grain nearly as cheaply as though farming in the broad and level valleys of California. The farmer owning one of these ma chines can put his grain in the sack for about what it coat him heretofore to head and stack it, thus saving the threshing bill, besides saving from two to four bushels of grain per acre in his harvest, that is absolutely wast ed in the old way of harvesting. Recently Cedar Circle, Women of Woodcraft, the Dalles, gave Mrs. J. bi. Filloon a party, in honor of the •steem in which she is held by the aeighbora of the order, and because ahe expects to so soon transfer her membership to Moro Circle. After the Wood was closed, a table was laid in the center of the hall and Mrs. Filloon given the seat of honor, Mrs Stephens, guardian neighbor, deliv ered the following: “Neighbors; we have prepared a little surprise tonight in honor of one of our neighbors, who will soon leave us, and make her home elsewhere. One who has labored with untiring devotion and loyalty for Woodcraft, and one whom we will ever remember as having sacrificed much for Cedar Circle. As Neighbor Filloon unlinks the chain of our circle, and goes from us, we feel that her place will not be easily filled, but as all earthly bonds must tome time be separated, we are glad that her home will not be so far dis tant But that we may still hope for her counsel and advice, and ofttimes again mingle together around our ei.d e camp-fire. Neighbor Filloon; this little remembrance I hold in my hand is emblematic of our belov ed order, the Circle; and giving it into your keeping we ask that you remember that our fraternity toward you is as strong and endless as this little token, which I now have the pleasure of presenting you, from the neighbors of Cedar circle No. 8.” The gift was a heavy silver napkin ring engraved, “Mrs. Filloon, from Cedar circle, May 12, 1899.” Mrs. Filloon, who was overwhelmed with surprise, gave the response to the presentation with a heart almost too foil of jpy or thankfulness, at the ap preciation she knows her neighbors have for her. A splendid program was rendered, and a delicious lunch served. “We hope,” says one who was there, “to have our neighbor Filloon with us many happy times ere she finally says goodbye.” PROPER CAUSE FOR DIVORCE. For the first time in my life will I try to write a tew lines for a paper, says a Wasco correspondent to The O. Man, to beg of you to lend us a helping hand in this, our sorrowful condition. The good book tells us there is a time for all things, to weep to mourn, to dance, and perhaps one may add, to work the roads. A few years ago the writer, who was then yet in prosperous circum stances, took it into his head to work one mile of road at the proper time and in a proper manner. Just as the frost left the ground I took my heav iest team and I plowed four rounds, throwing the earth in from both sides—this made eight miles plow ing. Then I harrowed four rounds, eight miles more. Then I went four rounds with a clod-masher,* eight miles more, one day’s work—24 miles. The sun did the baking and in two weeks you could have cracked a wal nut anywhere on that mile of road. It was baked hard. Any jterson doubting this can, for their own satis faction, ask Mr. Pulliam, of Wasco, who had occasion to travel that road many times that season. This mile of road has had no work since till this year, when the Bossyman sent in two men driving six or eight hor ses hitched to a go devil, and scraped all the loose dry dirt outside of the road in my track. Now, instead of a hard, solid road, we have to drive through soft earth, and when the wind blows the d— can’t face it for the dust. Last Sunday, while on my road to church, I saw miles of earth filling the lane from fence to fence, sky high, and as one woman said, aa thick as buckwheat batter. I found there many vehicles loaded with good looking females, and I know The Observer agrees with me in saying there is no other kind in this county—seeking for a sign of that beautiful road we had only one week before. But as the good book tella us, no sign could they find. Only the sign of some ignoramus who don’t know when or how to work the road. O, W hat a sorrowful sight was that When you couldn’t tall a fine Easter bon net From a comm on ccrn-thucker’s hat. I looked to my left and on a high barbed wire fence I saw Satan, seat ed with a long hook in his hand, ready to rake in the backsliders, for well did he know that those people would think dam it if they did not openly speak it. O, how I did wish our road Bossyman were there, I know that every occupant of those vehicles would have raised their hand and voice to that high-seated one: Take them home. Take them home. W here they justly belong; And for the sake o f suffering humanity Take this ground-up earth along.
