V ast TESLA’S LATEST INVENTION. He Albuquerque, N. M., O ct 5.—An attempt was made tonight to hold up paafiouger train No. 2, of the Atlantic Hi Pacific, due here at 8:45, just aa it whs leaving Rio Buercio budge, thirty mil«* weat of here. The attempt whs a failure, owing to the prompt ao’tiou of United htalea Deputy Marshal Loomis, who shot one of the rob be is dead and made it so uncomfortable for the others that they fled. Rio Buercio is only a pumping atation w ith a tele graph office, in chaige of the pump man. W nile the train w«a standing at the station, it w as boarded by three- masked men. who compelled the engineer to uncouple the engine and expreas car from the train and run th< lu on to the bridge. The pumpman at once sent word to this city and the Atlantic Ac Pacific company sent a special tram witn officers to the scene At mid- uigbt, the train arrived at Albu querque. Conductor Sam Heady states that when the train reacned the Rio Puer- cio tank Engineer Ross said that a pin in the engine was out of gear, but he thrugh he oould go up the divide. The conductor thought not, and just as the euigneer waa about to fix the pm three masked men jumped on the engine, when shooting Ooinmenced. A lan tern was shot out o t the hand of the brakemau, after which the eugioeer was told to uncouple the enigne and the express car from the tram. Deputy United States Marshall Loomis, who has beeu in Aritona on tne trad of the Southern New i l e i o i bandits, was on bis return to the city, and he left the smoking-car when tne Qr«t »hot was tired. He took deliberate aim at one of the robbers, shooting him through the head. I n e man ran for 100 yards and then dropped dead. Tne ott «*r robbeis r tiros ted to the Malpaia, where their voice« calling their oom- rsde oould be heard. Conductor Heady states that Loomis remained at Rio Puercio, expecting the robbers to return for their dead comrade, w hile Cade Selvy, special se cret service officer of the railroad, who was on the tram, met the p eat of officer* at A tlantic and Pacific Junc tion. and returned w ith the partv to Rio Puercio. The hold-up was a failure financial ly. the robbeis securing no money. Loom is thinks that the hold-upe are the same gang that robbed the Separ j>»«t- iffice a few weeks ago. and have been terrorizing Southern New Mexico, and that the dead robber waa the leader. He haa been work ing on the idea for ten years. "The object of my oscillator," laid Mr. Tesla, " it to provide a simple, compact and effective apparatus for producing greater effects with existing circuits carrying direct currents. Prac tical electricity is too expensive. It must be cheapened so the multitude may hr.re advantage of it. That is all 1 am aim ing at.
