Rufus is located beside the Col
umbia river on highway 30 and
was founded in 1800. It had less
than a hundred population until
the John Day dam located just a
mile east of town was started. In
thi 1900 Census there were .300
population, hut it nas doubled
since then. The extra population
brought about the building of two
new classrooms ’.o the Rufus
school to take care of the child
ren of the workers. The John Day
dam which is to he completed in
190? has all the W ashington side
of the river cofferdam work done
also the spillway. The arm y en
gineers of Walla Walla, Wash ,
11fiie expect to start work on the
Oregon sale this summer.
Besides the
dam, the Biggs
llapids bridge which is five mile-
west of Rufus Is rapidly drawing
to a close and the dedication is re-
portedly set for Sept. 1 The
bridge over the John Day river
