VICTORY OF POPULISM
One day this week while delv
ing into the insides of the old
Parry house we discovered som"
pages on the People’s Party P i
per printed in Atlanta, Ga.. prob
ably under the eye of Tom Wat
son, leader of the Populists as
the members of the People’s par
ty were called.
It was not surprising to discov
er this memory of the political
past for the house was built by
W. J. and Frank peddicord as a
residence for W. J. who taught
sch(X)l in Moro and was a candi
date for school superintendent in
1892 being defeated by Hiram
Tyree, and who made it in 1896.
After a term he became editor of
the local populist newspaper and
wrote long screeds about th?
necessity of adopting the theor
ies of that group.
Sorrow not for the populists.
Nothing Is dead about that party
but the name. As the New Deal
and whatever new Truman called
his administration and the New
Frontier, populism goes on strong
er than It was when William J.
Ilryan run as a Democrat advo
cating free coinage of silver at
16 to 1.
Populists hate money (other
people’s money) and hate bus!
ness ¡mil always have some gim
mick to make money easy for
all without going through the
trouble of earning it. Modern
populists call themselves lllx»rals
which they are not for liberals
traditionally hate government.
Back in 1893 when the pa|x?r
that started this editorlul was
printed, populists were advocat
ing the free coinage of silver and
a graduated income tax. postal
savings hanks, government man
agement of railroads, telephone
and telegraph, an eight hour da,
on government work, the Inltla
tlve and referendum, and a single
term for president. You see the
Populists have don«1 right well.
But the suspicion that is the
ear mark of all Populists slid
prevails. If anyone aa- money or
displays the evidence of It he is
a target for Populists who are
very sure he could not have got
ten It without some form of dis
honesty. They are ofen poor in
money and often |>oor in more
important things.

whose self appointed leaders seem
unrealistically reactk mary in po;-
itical ideas. Some ar e as socially
violent as the conn mmists they
would like to defeat, Some preach
ar. austerity not like ly to be lav-
ored by enough of t lie pampeve l
to make the reform effort prac-
ticai and thus are v /anting time
But we are very much coit
cerned about the tea: ions why the
John Birch society is attracting
s • much attention. Recall of Earl
Warren would not appall us al
though reinstatement of the laws
held unconstitutional by the
Warren court would lie no great
handicap to the Communists.
What we suspicion gives the
John Birch society support is the
fear and dislike of big govern
ment and big taxes and the ap-
parent prospect of getting more
o. the same for• tiie next four
years. Communisitn is hig g<oveni-
merit and total control oif pro-
ductlon. In other words the John
Birciiers seem to be trying to ix?
individuals in a socialistic soc let y
and being rather unsuccess ful at
it.
There isn’t much need of uny
new agencies to fight communism
whose name is anathema al
though its philosophy is gain
ing. Some who pro,ess the most
fear of communism embrace its.
ideas so that w hat w e nee i
more than another group to fight
communism is some better under
standing of what communism is.
This does not seem to be the role
ol the John Biren group.
But there must be an under
current of individualism and a
hidden dislike for big govern
ment to have made this litt»?
gioup so prominent.
