Oregon is experiencing a wel
come decline in traffic deaths so
far this year, the departm ent of
Motor Vehicles reported today.
With the first q u arter of the
year nearly over, deaths were
running about 24 per cent below
the same period last year. March
was recording about a 4,) per
cent decline.
While deaths were down, re
cords for January indicate that
accidents continue«! their upward
climb with more than 5,100 re-
j»orte<l for the first month of the
year, as compared with 4.284 in
January a year ago.
The reason for the January in
crease can be summed-up in one
word—snow, officials said.
itcco rds indicate that 2,373 ac
cidents occurred on snowy or icy
road surfaces due to the w intry
blast which hit the state early
in the year. Snow or icy road con
ditions were note«! in only 681
traffic m ishaps in January, 1950.
March accidents also may show
an increase due to the second
snow of the W’inter which hit
early this month, the departm ent
report Indicated.

The

A fine rain fell in the north end
