FRIDAY, APRIL 6, 195«
The members who voted for
the lioost are being accused of
putting all of the supposedly
needed money on in.unw luxjxiy-
ers to hut ten them up for a sales
tax. This we doubt. The legisla
tor-» did fall for invalid arguments
about the need for bigger appro
priations and for other invalid
estimates as to the need for 45%
surtax.
Whether this is a “do-nothing’’
agitation is remarkable when the
action of the voters is considered.
They vote it down by huge major
ities every time. We do not think
that high income taxes or high
property taxes will lead them to
change their attitude.
Often those who w'ould have to
pay the larger part of a sales tax
are the ones who advocate it.
True, they usually pay a good
share of other taxes as well. A
sales tax is sometimes proposed
as a sort of equalizer or even of
punishment. Those who ¡wy large
projierty and-or income taxes ad-
vo. ate it to make the working
man pay more taxes so he will i**
against so much government
spending.
Distribution of the income un-
dor some of the sales tax bills has
been stub that many could not
vole tor it.
Often it would too
lrastically redistribute the tax
.uoney most unfairly.
Under a
sales tax this county would J »ay
a great oval of money to the state
because sales of farm machinery
are usually high and living stand
ards above the average. Unless
we are assured of adequate repre
sentation and assured of distribu
tion of money to schools on an
equitable basis we cannot wisely
vote for a sales tax. Of course, we
never have.
Neither does this
newspaper think we will very
quickly.
