the land Jefferson had bought
from F rance and to ex ten d It to th e
ocean by the rig h t of discovery.
T here is little in th e ir tr ip to su it
the m odern sty le of sto ry telling,
no love interest, no ch ild ren to
em ote over, no b attle s w ith th e In
dians.
It was ju s t tru d g in g
through a w ilderness afoot o r a-
horseback or polelng a heavy
canoe up and dow n the stream s. It
was a con stan t h u n t for food, a
steady Job of try in g to ge~t som e
place else before bad w eather
m ade progress Impossible.
Had It been o th erw ise we would
still be search in g for th e ir bones
Instead of recalling thorn this

fru its of daily toll well done.
