Power-hungry politicians, seeking to control the Oregon dele
gation to the National Republican Convention, are throwing the
full force o f their machine into attacking the eight so-called
‘ petition” delegatee. '

The Oregon Direct Prim ary law under which these eight dele
gates filed by1 petition, seeking election ais free delegatee, not under
control of the state political machine was initiated BY THE PEO
PLE and adopted In Juné, 1904 by an overwhelming vote. *"
In 1915, the state legislature amended the original tew to pro
vide an 'additional method” for selecting delegatee without in any
way supplanting or disturbing the traditional and -time-honored
method of filing by petition.
In 1916 thia amendment was carried to the State Supreme
Court which ruled that the amendment "afforded another method
(additional to the petition method) for candidates to get before the
voters,” leaving the original petition method unchanged and Intact.
P R O T E C T S A G A IN S T M A C H IN E POLITICS
In 1939, the legislature passed a law taking from the people the
privilege of naming their own delegatee to the national conventions.
The tew was referred to the people who rejected it, choosing to
leave both TH E PETITION METHOD and| the DECLARATORY
METHOD ON TH E STATUTE BOOKS.
The petition method of filing is therefore a valid tew for the
specific purpose of protecting the public against machine politics
auoh as we have In the state t<xl«y.
