four g reat railro ad s on April 26. T hese
railroads are th e N ew York C entral, P en n ­
sylvania, S a n ta Fe, an d S outhern.
T h e union claim t h a t a second firem an
ia n e e d e d o n g r o u n d s o f s a f e ty is s h e e r
hypocrisy. S afety h a s been dragged m to
this disp u te only in an unsuccessful effort
to give a cloak o f resp ectab ility to vicious
feather-bedding dem ands.
After a careful s tu d y o f th e first de­
m ands of th is union, a P resid en tial F a c t
Finding B oard on M a y 21,1943, reported
to President R oosevelt t h a t th ere was no
need fo r a n e x t r a f ir e m a n o n d ie s e l
locom otives.
Again, on S ep tem b er 19, 1949, a fte r a
second bearing on th e union leaders’ d e ­
m ands. a second B oard reported to Presi­
d e n t T ru m a n th a t: " th e re preeently exists
no need for a n ad d itio n a l fire m a n . . . upon
either th e ground o f safety or t h a t o f
efficiency an d econom y of operation.

T h e real reason behind these dem ands is
t h a t th e union leaders are try in g to m ake
jobs w here th ere is no w ork. I n o th er
words, a plain case of "fe a th e r-b e d d in g .”
T h e railroads h a v e no in te n tio n o f yield­
ing to these w asteful m ake-w ork dem ands.
