Returning home after a couple
of months at Salem and takine
time to read some of the gather­
ing of newspapers we find th a t the
Optimist in The Dalles is, or at
least,, was, grevely upset over the
stand of the representative from
this district anent the Columbia
rivei bridge bill. So much upset
wm the editor that he was unaihle
to live up to. the paper’s ap­
pelli tion, Optimist.
It is perhaps improper for this
paper to rise to the defense of the
representative, but we are going
to do it nevertheless.
Denouncing the opposition to the
bi ioge bill as an ox-cart notion
the Optimist goes on inveighing
against anyone who.- would pre­
sume to want a bridge anywhere
but where The Dalles wants it.
His information is less adequate
than his temper.
The opposition expreessed a-
gainst the bridge bill was th a t it
included the power to purchase
e x itin g bridges across thè Col­
umbia. We still think th a t a valid
objection to the bill which was al­
so inclusive of nearly every other
verb giving power to obtain
b r:dges.
Headlines in papers along the

of the bill as originally explained.

tween communities over the loca­
tion of a possible bridge, it is just
as ox-cartish on the p art of one
community as another.
