The Oregon returns in the recent
battle of the, bal)ots were not with
out their usual quota of surprises,
not the least o f which was the
astounding plurality amassed by
President Roosevelt. . While this
state had b<en pretty generally
eonseded to tha. Democratic candi-
d aten ot even his most rabid parti
sans had anticipated the land slide
which swept* ^yery county in the
state—including rock ribbed Re-
publicah .Blm&9;init<>, the Roosevelt
column. Republican* who had con-
sedfed a * Roosevelt victory in this
state bad grudgingly estimated his
margin of victory at 16.000 to 20,-
000. Democralh. on the other hand,
had claimed the state for ttfair
candidate by any where from 40,-
000 to 76.000, a few of the more
wild eyed partisans boosting the
margin to l ¿ T u r f,» . 100,000. The
voters gave "hini a plurality of
more than 143,000.
Only a little less surprising than
the huge total rolled up by Roose
velt was the strength displayed by
Willis Mahoney, democratic can
didate for United States Senator,
who, carried along on the crest of
.the democratic land slide and with
substantial aid from his Townsend-
ite admirers came -within 6000
votes of unseating the veteran
Chas. L. McNary^ republican floor
leader in the Senate, and generally
accounted an easy victor in. the
race for re-election.
Alfred Dobson, democrat, whp
was expected to give the veteran
I. H. Van Winkle a hard race for
the attorney generalship did so,
coming within 11,000 of winning.
One of the most unexplainable
results of the election was the
big vote polled by the old age
pension amendment which came
within 5500 vot:-s of carrying and
which,, had it been approved, would
have completelly disrupted the
state's old age pension seV-up, dry
and county oid age
