P ie r N arragansett Pier, R. 1., Sept. 20._ Miss W innie Davis, daughter of Mrs. b'tlerson Davis, died at noon today at | i hotel here, to which place she came is a guest in the early pm it of the j pier’s social season. She had been ill for several weesk. Mis. Davis had watched unrem it tingly at her d aughter’s iH-dside, and I -lie is now bowed with sorrow. Tho f physicians of Mis. Davis reports she is J holding up w ith gloat calmness in her affliction, and no fears are at present I entertained of her health yielding to the ’ strain. Miss W innie Davis, the “ Daughter of the C onfederacy," was born in tho Confederate executive m ansion, at Richmond, Va., in 1863. Sho was ed ucated principally at home, owing to tho troubles surrounding her father and tho publicity which attended all m ove m ents of tlio Davis family. Miss Davis attained her m aturity at Beauvoir, Miss. Here she assisted her m other ill various ways and took her place in the many social functions o f tho place. She was hei fa th e r’s constant com pan ion. She assisted him in all his work, and much of the inform ation which was required by Mr. Davis in his w rit ings was secured for him by his daugh ter. Her strong character w a s m a l k e d from youth. She was engaged to Mr. W ilkeson, of Syracuse, N. Y ., hut shortly after her father’s death the e n gagem ent was broken off. W hile no public explanation of rupture was given, it is well known th at it was for the purpose of m aintaining her father's name. She received tiie name “ D aughter of the Confederacy’’ in 1886. when her father made his famous trip through tho Sooth. Mr. Davis being unable to appear, Miss Winnie was brought before the thousands at the different points along the route, and introduced as the “ D aughter of tiie Confederacy.” W E D N E S D A Y , SE P T E M DER HIS FRIENDS OFF 21, FO R IN THE INTEREST OK SHER MAN COUNTY. ♦ K e e p Y o u r E y e o n t h e I .e a d e r . --------- -------- IS O S .
