W h it Is probably the oldest throne I d Europe has Jn«t been discovered and
laid bare. This remarkable and surprising find was accomplished by the British
archaeologist sud explorer, A rthur Evans, at Knossos, on tbe island of Crete.
The main feature of his last aeasoa’a work was the uncovering of the original
gypsum throne used by King Minos In his great pnlace, now being excavated.

Zens and received from the Immortal god of tin- mountains the laws for his
|M-ople. Here from th e gypsum throne more than 4,000 years ago King Minos read
his laws to his subjects. The m 1st interesting of all tbe chambers exposed was
the spacious throne-room. The walls were elaborately decorated with fresco«»,
which have established a new epoch In the history of painting for that early
period, as little of the kind, even of the c!««si« al Greek anthpiity has been hith
erto known earlier than the Fomiadian series.
Th«- colors were almost a» brilliant as when laid down more than 4,000 years
ago. Bound the walls of the throne room were found low atone benches, and
betwe«-n these, separated by a small interval and raised 011 a stone baa«-, stood
the great gypsum throne, with a high ba k and colored with decorated designs.
Its lower part was adorned with a curiously carved an-h. with rrotebeted mold
ings. showing an extraordinary anti« ipation of some moat characteristic of Gothic
archil«-« lure. Here truly was the < oum-il chamber of King Minos and bis sover
eign lady. It may be said today that the youngest of Kuropean rulera (Prince
