Hah-m, O r., Hept. 12.— “ The chance« are tliat the hop crop for Oregon thia year w ill not exceed 80,000 lielee/'aaid a prominent local dealer today. "Picking ia well under way In all of tlie yarde,” he eonCnoed, “ aixl while tlie crop w ill be larger d u n laat year, it w ill tie much lighftx» than waa ex pected a few weeks ago. L«st year the crop was very slxirt in tlie W illamette valley, doe to tlie exceptionally hot •pell in July. This year the crop proaaimd to ’ie much larger ami nearer an average crop, causing aome dealers to estiuiais tlie prolmbie yield aa high aa 90,000 bolus. " I t ia now evident that the crop is an outside or a top one, and there are not near aa many hops on the vine« as appearances indicated. The latest cable repr.rta from England state that the crop in that country ia coming down very light, and that the mold ia spreading rapidly. Grower« are trying to pick hops ahead of the mold there, but cannot keep pace with it, and it ap pear« tliat England w ill have another crop of poor quality and w ill have to look to Oregon for choice hop«. “ I t ia plain to a greet many dealers that the New York state crop w ill lie less than 25,000 bale«. This ia a marked de reese from that of last year, when tlie Empire state produced 65,000 »tales. Sept. 11.— The steamer Cot- tege C ity, of the Pacific Coast steara th ip Company, went ashore at 10:20 o'clock Sunday u.ght on Island Point, Etelin island, fetickeen strait, 20 mil«« ■oath of Fort Wrangle. Bite now lies «0 loot forward on tha rock a. f ift y feet of the keel are gone, and her fore foot is dry at low water. The steamer filled aft, and the hurricane deck, to the top of the smoking room, ia under water at high tide. The vessel ia welt sheltered, and it is believed a bulkhead can be h nilt inside and the ship floated. The 150 passengers of the Cottage City were transferred to the steamer kipokane, of the same com pany, which came along abont three hours after the accident, bound north. Tlie were taken on to Rkagway, and w ill return south on the Hpokane. Tba Cottage City was bonnd for Seattle when the accident occurred, and was due to arrive fiere today. Over 100 tons of cargo were jettisoned. The remainder of the cargo, consisting chiefly of sal moo, waa tranaferred to lighters and taken ashore. Details ol Low the accident occurred are lacking. The Cottage C ity was comman«ied by Captain David Wallace. Hhe ia a wooden vessel, which probably accounts for tlie fact that she did not break to pieces on the rocks. From „official re ports to the headquarters of the com pany here, it is said that there ia no doubt that the vessel w ill he floated and repaired, unless (torma of unusual severity intervene.
