A Christmas Burglar,
1!ifc?iiiSe
AHA! A burglar in the room!
jJ I hctir his stealthy trend:
He's slinking somewhere through
the gloom
By yonder trundle led.
Aci-oss the creaking chamber floor.
His fearful footsteps fall.
What form teas that stoic through th
door
And out along tho hallt
'What form teas that, clad all in white
And scarcely three feet Mghi
A burglart Or some Christinas sprite
With mischief in his eyet
What! You! Abroad before the day
Has lit his rounH, red lamp!
What takes you from your slumbers,
pray,
You little, owlish scampt
You came away down here because
You really felt that you
Must wait for Mr. Santa Claus
And sec if he was tract
You braved the darkness, unafraid
And all its terrors grim,
And this long, dreadful journey made
To prove your faith in himf
Well, back to bed, for he IS true;
Your precioui faith hold fast.
Old Santa Claus will live for you
While dreams and childhood last.
And when at length you take your place
Among tho world of men,
In every little Christmas face
He'll live for you again.
James J. Montague in .Veto York
American.
Her Little Prayer.
A little girl of a bi? eastern city was
visiting her grandmother on Thanks
giving day. Already tho child hod be
Bun to speculate on what Santa Clnus
was to briup her at Christmas time,
and, ns children especially girls will
do when they are at the home of nn In.
dulgeut friend, she began to rummage
through closets and drawers.
In tho course of her lnvestlgationshe
came upon a brand new white muff.
It was the very thing she had wanted,
and she knew that Santa Claus' chief
purchasing agent grandma had ob
tained It for her.
Taxed with it, grandma admitted the
truth.
"But." she said, "you must forget all
about it until Christmas day."
That night as she was being put to
bed the child astonished tier mcthor by
adding this to her evening prayer:
"Please, God, make me forget all
about tho little white mulf Santa Claus
is to bring." New l'oik Times.
