Eagle Valley
Show Their
Tho most patriotic celebration
over witnessed in this section
was he(j Monday evening n
honor of the Eagle Valley young
men who left Tuesday noon to
Join tho colors. While directly
under tho supervision of the K.
of I', and Pythian Sisters lodges
the affair was open and free to all
and residents from all sections
were present to help make the
occasion one long to be remem
bered. Those who left Tuesday were
Tracy Matthews. Chas. Murphy,
Roy Campbell, Harland Benne
hoff and Ralph Guyer. tho first
three named being members in
good standing of Irvine Ixdgo
No. 80, Knights of Pythias.
At 7 o'clock the Pythian Sisters
entertained the boys at a banquet
supper (this being the only part
of the program to which tho pub
lic was not invited), after which
A. W. Parker showed the five!
reels of war films. These were;
indeed a treat and were indeed
appropriate. Mr. Parke's gen
erosity ip giving the show free;
is highly commended.
Senator Strayer was then in
troduced, and for one hour held
the audienco spoil bound by his
eloquence. In fact, so intensely!
interesting was his address that
timewas not thought of and few
realized that when the speaker
closed his address that it had
occupied sixty minutes. Thanks
are extended to Mr. Strayer by
the people of Eagle Valley for his
kindness in coming out from
Baker at his own expense and
donating his services to the good
of the cause.
At the close of the program,
which included songs, recitations
and short talks by various parties,
all were given an opportunity to
shake hands with the buys and
wish .them God speed.
The floor in the opera house
was then cleared and all those
so inclined enjoyed a dance until
Tuesday morning. A midnight
supper was served free at the
Richland Hotel to nil who cared to
partake of same; this featuro be
ing provided by Mr. and Mrs.
Stout and son with the assistance
of several of our citizons.
Monday noon an impromptu
parade was given. Headed by a
drum corps and a flag bearer, the
five boys, followed by o largo
body of Knights of Pythias and
Pythian Sisters, school children
and citizens, marched from tho
Matthews home to the flag pole
where allegiance to tho flag was
pledged. After three rousing
cheers were given, tho boys got
into E. N. Taylor's auto and loft
to serve their country.
The full import of the demon
stration was to give honor, not
alone to tho boys who left Tues
dayi but to every one of our boys
who is already in service or who
may hereafter enter into this
great fight against Kaiserism and
Residents
Patriotism
barbarism. It clearly proved
that the citizens of this commun
ity stand squarely behind the
boys and the government in every
way and woe be imto the man
who dares to voice sentiments in
and manner contrary to thewjsh
for complete defeat of Germany.

Halfway's Jeweler Skips
II. C. Timms, the jeweler who
has been holding forth in Half
way for two years or mere, left
for "greener fields and pastures
now" several days sincaand it is
reported that he is nqw in South
America.
It seems that Timms left the
store in a shape that the im
prcssion might prevail that the
place had been robbed after hiB
departure, as nothing remained
in the building but the store fix
tures. Little credence can be
given thac theory, however, for
tho morning he passed through
Richland on his way out he stop
oed at Barber's for gas and when
we called his attention to the
load of boxes in tho car he told us
that he had another store in
Southern Oregon and was taking
over a stock for holiday trade.
A Big Success
The school entertainment at
New Bridge last Saturday night
was a success in every particular
the total receipts of the evening
amounting to over $110. Tho
play, "Snow White," was prob
ably tho most difficult ever put
on in Eagle Valley, by children of
like ago. yet it was rendered in a
very creditable manner and with
entire satisfaction to the audi
ence. Misses Adda Martin, Merle
Simonis and Lucile Brooks, the
teachers, are to be highly com
plimented on the success of the
affair.
Take Warning!
Tho gang of hoodlums that have
recently hoisted different articles
to tho top of the flag pole should
take warning and cease such
I pranks before they get into ser
ious trouble. They are all known
and had it not been for repect
to their parents they would have
been arrested for their actions
last Friday night. We would ad
vise all parents to keep their boys
off the streets at night.
Don't forget that I want to
meet all of my little friends at
the Btore of E. & W. Chandler,
