&e Old Home Paper
When the overling Hhade is fallin' at the closing of the day,
An' a feller rests from labor, smokin' at his pipe of clay,
There's nothin' does him so much good, be fortune up or down,
As the little country paper from his Old Home Town.' ,
It ain't a thing of beauty, nnd its print's not always clean,
But it straightens out his temper when a feller's feelin' mean;
It takes the wrinkles off his face an' brushes off the frown
That little country paper frdm his Old Home Town.
It tells of all the parties an' the balls of Pumpkin Row,
'Rout who spent Sunday with who's girl, an' how the crops!Jl grow,
An' it keeps a feller posted on who's up and who is down
That little country paper from his Old Homo Town.
Now, I like to redd the dailies an' the story papers, too,
An' at times the yaller novels an' some other trash don't you?
But when I want some readin' that'll brush away a frown,
1 want that little paper from my Old Home Tdwn.
There are two things the soldier boy wants more than anything
else in the world a letter from home and a copy of his old home
newspaper. The first brings him the love ho crdves, the other the
news ho longs for. The homo tie 13 the strongest that the soldier
knows. Keep it intaet.
MORE BAD LUCK
Monday as Henry Bradford was
coming from the Reserve with a
load of wood and was on the
grade about one and a half miles
above New Bridge, he stopped
his horses to more securely fasten
on somescrcen doors he was haul
ing down: His lead team Uscamo
frightened at something and in
plunging forward broke the
stretchers and ran away.
In some unaccountable manner
the left hind foot of one Of the
animals was almost completely
severed at tjie ankle, and in this
condition the team ran clear into
New Bridge where they were
captured and the crippled animal
shot to end its sufferings.
Eye witnesses state that the
animal run in the lead in Spite of
the fact that the foot was hang
ing by a small stiip of skin and
that the splintered bono and raw
flesh of the stump were thrust
into the dirt und rocks at nearly
Taking things all around, Mr.
Bradford has had more than his
share of hard luck the past season;
and is entitled to the sympathy
of all in this community.
Does This Strike You?
In the Red Gross campaign in'
June this county subscribed ap
proximately $30;000. This was a
fine tribute and indication of our
patriotism. The acid test how
over, is not what we say we will
do but what we actually do, and
it appears that there are a num
ber of unpaid pledges In Baker
county.' All pledges to this t und
were supposed to have been paid
on o'r before October 1st, and If
you, dear reader, happen to bo

their pledge; don't delay 16nger

A meeting df the State High
way Commission was held at
Portland Tuesday, for the pur
pose of considering and submit
ting to the Federal Engineers the
Baker-Cornucopia Highway. At
I this meeting-a statement was
'submitted showing the number
'of people who would be served by
! the establishment of a Star or
Post Route up the Powder River
While we have not yet learned
the result of this meeting, we
can say without fear of contra
diction, that the survey through
the Powder River Canyon will be
made immediately, and the work
from Baker to Love Bridge post
poned until a later date. Before
the matter is definitely settled,
however, the Sparta route will be
given due consideration.
Every indication points toward
the Securing of this much needed
improvement for the Panhandle
section providing the residents
do their part, and we feel confi
dent that they will, for the lack
of a good road to the county seat
has cost this' section alone many
thousands of dollars annually.
Take This In,
An excellent program will be
gi ven at the Pleasan t Ridge school
house ori tomorrow (Friday) eve,
beginning promptly at 8 o'clock.
