The disagreeable weather last Saturday prevented a great many from attending tho agricultural exhibit at Sparta, but the crowd that braved tho elements felt re paid for their venture by the generous hospitality accorded by the residents of that wide awake community. The exhibit was a rovelation to tho visitors who could scarcely believe that the products shown could have been raised without irrigntion during the past excessively hot and dry season. Many were heard to re mark that "if Buch things were raised this season, in ordinary years Sparta cannot be equalled. " The best specimens in the ex hibit were ooxed and sent to Port land where they will be viewed by tens of thousanos during the land show, thus proving to the world at large that tho pioneer miners of the Sparta district fail ed to find but little of the real gold in that section. Tho dance at night drew a big crowd of young lolks who had a royal good time in spito of the cold and a'f ter expenses were paid the balance was turned into the Red Cross fund. Engineer Kingsley of the state highway commission was in town last Thursday evening, having walked through, from Bake? over the Powder River route of the proposed Baker-Cornucopia post road. He stated that from his observations he deemed the route practical and would recommend same but that the final decision rested with federal authorities. Mr. Kinersley was much enthused over the prosperity and undevel oped opportunities offered in the Panhandle section and said that our citizens would make a"serious mistake if they failed to back the movement by liberal donations, as many other districts were de sirous of taking advantage" of the opportunity to secure good roads with state and federal assistance. He stated also, that is was his opinion that the matter would be settled at an early date. A committee will soon start out soliciting contributions for this improvement and we feel confi dent will meet with great success for every resident in this section should realize that such a road will benefit Eagle Valley alone thousands of dollars yearly.
