disbanded, and I was on my way to

poses and got on as best I could. si

found n friend, who got out bis coach

could go no farther.

bad made half the distance when the
coach came to a sudden stop, and a
voice at the wiudow cried out:
"Your money or your life!"
"Money I have none." I replied, "but
my watch is at your disposal."
Taking from my pocket a timepiece
that my father had giveu me and to
whose fob bung n dainty locket con
taining a miniature likeness of my
mother. I handed it to the roblier, who
without another word made off. his
horse's hoofs beating the road, the
sounds dying away in the distance.
I bad wen nothing of him through
the darkness, and all 1 had beard was
bis demand for plunder. Ity this I
judged that he was very young or that
his voice was pitched in a bigli key for
a man. since it laid noue of that gruff

home in recovering from the exposure

was then that I learned what my cotin

Tliere was little left to eat or to wear,
und many farmeiw had been reduced
to u pitiable condition.
Such times are prolific of crime, and
I was told that same persons of re
spectability had been reduced to get
ting a living in any way they could,
some resorting to robbery, while others
had been obliged to pilfer. This led
mo to think of the youngster who had
robbed me of my watch on the road.
One of the Hist visits I made nfter I
had regained my strength was. to the
Leslies. I liad a fancy that if any
families pulled through the hard times
they would be among the lot, for they
were rich in lands. But I found that
tho more laud n ponton had during the
Revolution the poorer he wuh left, for
the land was not productive, and the
taxes on It, being badly needed by tho
state, were rigorously collected. I
found Mrs. Leslie at home with her
younger children. Her husband and
oldest son had gone down in tho war.
Her daughter Madge, who, to tell the
truth, I wished ett ially to see, was
not nt home. When I nsked the moth

she was accompanied by a tall girl who

that she was Madge Leslie, nud I won

able to deck herself out so Mplcndidly.

the miniature It contained.
