URINGS TALE; LEAVES FOOT Eskimo Arrives at New York With Thrilling Account of Encounter With Grizzly Bear. lllubborliiK with toy. Aswntuk. an Eskimo, to bo known on tho Pctinuyl- vanla farm, whlthor ho has nono, by two torn patronym of Morris Lovy, was roloasod from Kills Island la chnrKO of Miss Martha Llnlngor, a nurso at tho Orenfoll mission, In I-abrador, says tho Now York lloruld. Aswntuk (until ho reaches Pennsylvania) has only ono foot. Tho other, tho loft, wns chawed off by a grizzly bear, whoroin lies thy story. Aswntuk which moans "tho chilly Imby" Is sixteen yonrs old, but, ac cording to tho story, he's so bravo thnt Labrador la probably rollovcd to bo rid of hla daring spirit. Miss Lolnlngor, who brought him bnck with hor, had troublo getting hltn Into tho country, but finally nppenls to Washington wero nnswerod, and Aswa- tuk is off to tho farm. Hut to tho talo of that missing foot. On a cold, windswept night in Holster's Hock, Labrador, llttlo Aswntuk and his mother huddled about tho whnlo oil lamp, wondering If Papa Aswntuk. tho daring fisherman, was riding tho galo. Suddenly from outside tho igloo there como a scratching and tho hearts of Aswntuk nnd his mothor congenlod. Thny know It wns tho dread scratching of a polar bear scratching his way In to make a meal off thorn. Sundries in tho way of drlod moose moat and mission tracts wero usod to bolster tho fast weakening wall of tho Igloo, but all In vnln. Through a rnggod aperture gloomed tho horrid faco of a grizzly boar. Ho ynwnod In anticipation of llttlo Aswa tuk a plump youth Just as Aswatuk klckod with his loft foot Tho foot reached tho open mouth Just as It closed, nnd Just ns Aswntuk's mother dropped tho whnlo oil Inmp on tho benr's head. With a groan of pain nnd nngor tho grizzly loped lightly away, blazing with wrath and whnlo oil, but still clinging to Aswntuk's foot Aswatuk was taken to tho hospital at St Anthony's, whoro ho recovered sultlclontly to bo brought to this coun try. 8o goes tho talo of Aswatuk as told by hlmaolf. Preventing 3oU Erosion. Soli erosion is doing business dam ngo constantly, and fow peoplo know how to apply provontlvo measures. In tho nnnunl report of tho bureau of soils of tho department of agrlculturo a slmplo method of handling ono class of erosions Is described. This Is tbo caso whoro tho soil Is bolng washed away in gullies, nnd the romody Is to build a dam across tho Inctplont gul ly, through which a Bower plpo Is pnssod, connecting wjth an upright plpo situated at tho uppor stdo of tho dam. Tho hollow formed by tho dam will fill with wator in flood conditions until tho top of tlio upright plpo Is reached, whon tho oxcoss of wator runs off quietly Into tho noxt flold or Into another Impounding spneo bolow. Tho cutting current of tho draining water Is stoppod and tho sediment carrlod by It sottlos abovo tho dam, thus tond Ing to ropalf tbo damago previously dono. A sultnblo tlio drain locntod undor tho dam will dlsposo of tho wa ter impounded bolow tho opoutng of tho upright plpo. Renllstle Maneuver. IN A KERRY THE historical and political Im portance of Ireland has cre ated In tho minds of many Americans nn exaggerated idea of tho Island's physical proportions snd tho density of Its population, two vital factors In England's task of sup pressing tho rebellion which had Its Inception In tbo capital and largest city, Dublin. According to the Na tional Geographic society's bulletin tho wholo of Ireland embraces an area slightly loss than the stato of Malno, but with a population almost six times as dense. In comparison with tho governing country, it is throo-flfths as largo as England and Wales, with one-ninth tho population. Tho island Is ono of tho very few sections of tho civilized world where tho population has shown a marked Jocrcase during tho last contury. The first census of tho Island, taken In 1S21, recorded a population almost 50 per cent larger than at tbo pres ent tlmo, wlillo tho census of 1841 showed tho hlgh-wnter mark of moro than eight millions, nearly twlco tbo present population of 4,375,000. This remarkable decrease, duo largely to emigration, began aftor tho famlno brought about by tho destructive dls- caso which attacked tho potato crops of 1845. This calamity resulted In tho withdrawal of moro than a mil lion acres from cultivation within two years. Incldontally tho potato, which has playod such an Important rolo In tho llfo of Iroland during tho last 300 years, is not Indigenous to tho Island, but was ono of tho food gold mines discovorcd by tho Spaniards In their conquest of Peru. Tho country is di rectly lndobtcd' to Sir Waltor Raleigh TORC CASCADE for ltd "Irish" potatoes, as it was ho who brought them from what is now North Carolina and planted thorn on his ostato near Cork in 1585. Mountains, Bogs and Lakes. Iroland llos on tho wostorn rim of what was onco a part of Continental Kuropo. It has numorous mountains, tho hlghost bolng tho McQUUcuddy Hooks (3,414 foot), In tho Klllarnoy region, but thoro Is no mountain chain or olovatod "backbone" Thoro is a moro or loss woll-doflnod central plain, however, tho distinguishing fea ture pt which Is Its bogs tho black bog producing the famous peat fuel, aLBLLLSBBaHBaLPVLvll VILLAGE differentiated from tho brown bogs of the mountains. It the wholo Island wero brought to a mean level It would rise 400 feet abovo tbo sea. The lakes, or loughs, of Iroland arc among Its most widely appreciated physical characteristics, tholr scenic beauty being tho Inspiration of poeU, painters and musicians. Nor havo the Irish rivers been overlooked in ap praisals of tho island's beauties. The Shannon, which flows for 250 miles from the county of Cavan in the northwest to tho Atlantic in tho southwest, is tho longest water course in tho Unitod Kingdom. It is navi gated by largo steamers for half Its length, and Is connected with Dublin by means of tho Grand and Royal canals. Although coal Is found in most of tho 32 counties into which the island Is divided, and there Is considerable iron ore, mining is not an important Industry. Gold was being mined in a modest way in County Wicklow at tho tlmo of tho rebellion of 1798, but tho works were destroyod and the Bourco of tho metal has never boon ro-dtscororcd. Industries of the Island. Agrlculturo and stock raising aro tho chief occupations of tho lnhabl tants. At ono tlmo tho woolen manu factures of tho Island wero formld nblo rivals of English factories, but hostile legislation gavo tho industry a check from which It has never recov ered. As tho Irish havo raised flax for centuries tho manufacture of llnon early became ono of tho Important industries of tho country. Irish whisky Is an important article of ox port and ono of tho largest breweries in tho world Is locnted at Dublin. Tho island's production of beer Is three and a half million barrels annually. Shipbuilding in tho great yards at Dclfast Is one of tho most widely known of Irish activities, and tho deep sea and const flshorlos afford a live lihood for many thousands. Thanks to tho temperato Influence of tho west winds from tho Atlantic, tho thormomotor rarely reaches freez ing jtolnt In winter, while tho avor ngo for a summer day Is CO degroes. At Toor Head on tho north tho dls tnnco to Scotland (Mull of Cantlrl) Is only miles. Tho Giant's Cause way, a short distance to tho east of this point, Is tho outcropping basaltic formation which in a former age Joined tho two islands. Water Seemingly Flows From Tree. At Mount Lowo, Cal.. tho thirsty vis Itor has only to turn on a faucet pro jecting from a largo troo near tho ho t,ol and wator begins to flow. No wa ter pipes aro to bo seen, and curios ity is nroused at onco, Tho lower part of tho trco is hollow, and tho pipes are run underground and up through tho hollow part to a knotholo, whoro a faucot Is attached, Around tho faucet tlio holo Is plugged up with comont which looks llko tho troo Itself. Wise Practice of the Incas. Tho IncaB, nnclont rulers of Peru, wero ono of tho earliest authentic ex amples of tho high ougenlo dovolop niont of tho human raco. Tholr ays torn of choosing each year tho flnost physical specimens of young woman hood from all classos to become "brides of tho suu," or wives of the rulor, having qulto an opposite offoct to that of tbo limited and unfortunate matrimonial customs of present day royalty. ALL CHARGED UP TO BROWN Janitor Had Lost Nothing and Had Made Something of a Reputation for Urbanity. Ono day Drown lost his temper and determined to discipline tbo Janitor. "Why Is it" bo said, "that every tlmo anybody In this building loses anything you ask us if we know what has becomo of it?" "Because," tho Janitor replied, "you aro tho only folks that never lose any thing." Next morning Drown shouted down tho dumbwaiter shaft: "Wo'ro abort a bottlo of milk; where Is it?" "I don't know, sir," tho Janitor an swered humbly. "I'll seo It I can And It," "Why," said Mrs. Brown, "wo got our milk." "Don't worry," said her husband. "Of courso ho can't find It but it will do him good to stew around a little." About 15 minutes later Brown was summoned to tho dumbwaiter. "Here's your milk," said tho Janitor. "I'm sorry I made a mistake." Brown was bewildered. "Now, wbero on oarth did tho fellow get it?" he said. "He has taken it from ono of the neighbors," walled Mrs. Brown. Next day Brown complained of the loss o a package- of sugar, which, though purely imaginary, so far as tho Drowns wero concerned, very soon materialized In the hands of the re sourceful Janitor. Even Brown got uneasy then; but being bent on ven geance, he subsequently reported as lost bread, a head of lettuce, and a bag of potatoes, all of which were Im mediately produced by tho Janitor. When Drown paid his grocery bill for tho month, Mrs. Brown, who is a systematic housekeeper, scanned the account "Why, they havo made a mistake," she said. "They have charged us for milk and sugar and things wo never got" Drown went back to tho grocery to Inquire. "It's all right" he said; upon his return. "Wo got tho stuff. Tho Jan itor ordered it" Activities of Women. Russia has over 3,000 women physi cians. The Woman's Trade Union of Amer ica has over 65,000 members. Three out of every four nonagena rians In Berlin, Germany, are women. Miss Jean T. Mochle, an automobile saleswoman, recently showed that she could handle machinery as well as sell cars. In a leather apron and blue Jean coat she stood on a platform in a New York salesroom and dismantled and assembled a motor taken from a car sho had driven over ton thousand miles. The wearing of a skirt which was so tight that it interfered with the free use ot her limbs caused Mrs. Delia Wilson ot Kansas City to lose her suit for $5,000 damages against tho Chi cago, Durlington & Quincy railroad. Tho Jury contended that a skirt which was only 32 inches wido was' entirely too narrow for free use ot the feet in boarding a train. Wonderful New Resistance Alloy. A now alloy for use In making elec tric resistance was put on the market in Germany shortly beforo the war and Is said to bo ot great use In case the resistance wires or strips need to ' bo worked at a high heat; for tho new alloy ot chromium and nickel can be run at oven a bright red heat without suffering damage, and such heating does not mako the metal brittle upon long use. Specific gravity of the alloy is 8.25, and it has a specific resistance per meter length and square millimeter section ot 1.10 ohms. It can support a temperature ot 1110 degrees C. on constant run. The melting point la 1400 degrees C. The Exception. A noted English suffragette said the other day to a Now York reporter: "Your Idea ot us militants is that wo are vixens, tartars and man-haters, but, as a matter ot fact, we havo in our ranks Borne of the most elegant and fascinating women in London so ciety. "No, tho militant is not llko Mrs. Diane, who said to hor' daughter ono day: " 'I am. certainly eaBy on shoos. Look at this pair of elastic sides. I've worn them Ihroe years and thoy'ro still as good as now. I'm easv on clothes, too, Thero's my tweed Just as fresh as tho day I bought it seven years ago. And hats, glovos, stockings in fact, I'm easy on everything.' " 'Except father, eh?' paid tho daugh ter, without looking up from her book." Looked Pretty. Patlonco Polly said they had a hlghly-pollshed hardwood floor up whero she called. Patrlco And did she say it looked pretty?" "Why, of course. Sho said sho could see horselt In it"
