A LETTER FROM FRANCE Tracy Matthews recently re ceived a letter from Corporal M. Eylar Staight, who is now "Some-) where in i'Vance. " The letter had been censured and a sentence cut out, and under the rules govern ing tho press we likowise omit a few sentences. . Hdvayer, jt will be interesting reading: "1 like it fine here and the peo ple treat us swell. Everything is cheap so we have a pretty good time. The people here live mostly on beer, wine, cheese and rye bread. Wine and beer is Mc per quart in our money. There are lots of girls and, believe me, they are pretty. We have quite a time talking with them. They learn English better than we do French. I couH write all nightbut will have to wait anil tell it to you. I sure wish you were with me. Everything is so different here one never gets tired running around. Well, must close; tell my friends hello for me. Regards to all." Address: Corporal M. Eylar Staight. 18th Co., 5th Regt., U. S. M. C, Care Postmaster N. Y. City. The Dairy Law. Many complaints are heard re garding the dairy law that went into effect last month, and very fow in this section have paid any attention to it. Tlvat the law has somo good points, no one will deny; but all will agree that it is unjust to tho farmers and ranch ers wlio occasionally have a roll or two of butter to sell. We are told that the testing is done without charge to the ani mal's owner, therefore we sug gest that every person who owns cattle should write the stato vet erinary at once, requesting that he test every cow you own no matter whether It is one or a thousand, so long as it Is done without expense to you. Potatoes, tomatoes, carrots, beans, cabbage, parsnips, corn, muskmelons, squash, stock beats and' cucumbers are, shoytn..,AU afeo'f good size and entirely' free I from disease such as is usually J met with in other districts. These were raised by Rev. J. ! M. Johnson, who has made an ; affidavit that everything shown was grown on dry land, not irri ; gated or watered, and not near any spring or ditch where the ground might have secured mois ture by sub-irrigation, and also that from the time of planting until gathering, the crops were benefitted by no rainfall. The exhibit shows clearly that that any man with brains, muscle and ambition can enjoy an ex cellent living and make money on a Sparta homestead. Mr. John son tells us that the possibilities of the section are practically Un known, as but very little of the best land has as yet been cleared, and predicts that within the next few years the Sparta country will be one of foremost agricultural districts in the Northwest. Car Shortage Predicted A circular issued by the Inter national Harvester Co. gives a timely warning to all whose busi ness is affected by the movement of freight, saying: "We antici pate that, notwithstanding the utmost efforts of the railroads, this fall and winter will witness the worst freight tie-up the coun try has over known." They fur ther add thaf'Itis the duty there fore, of all business men, citizens and shippers generally, to order at onco all necessaries that must come by rail and ship all freight without delay, anticipating de liveries whereever possible."
