NEW ROAD PUNNED :
A movement is on foot to bavc
the present county road up Eagle
Canon extended to the mouth of
Little Eagle. A preliminary Btir
vey following the present trail
from the old Geo. EvanH ranch,
showfe that there will he loss than
two miles of road to build.
The expense of building will be
slight an there will be approx
imately 'H00 feet of level road,
1S00 feet of dirt grade, 2G00 feet
rock grade, and about 1500 feet
around rocky points that will call
tor blasting.

LATEST DRAFT NEWS
During the five days that will i
bo occu'ded by the migration of
the'draft contingent to the train
ing camps, seven towns in Oregon
namely: Roscburg, Ashland, Al
bany, Grants Pass, Eugene, Salem
and Modford, will be called upon
to feed 21,349 men, a total of
228,340 meals.

on the first draft, as given in last
week's paper, he was the first
one, and left yesterday for Am
erican Lake with the other Baker
county contingent. Nothing de
finite can be learned as to whom
will be the next to go on the 29th.

and Ira Bradford.
When the drafted men go into
training at Camp Lewis. Ameri
can Lake, Wash., they will find a

Waste of Time and Postage
Hundreds of thousands of let
ters have been written to officials
at Washington, by parties trying
to have tho rulings of the district
exemption boards reversed. Such
letters will do no good whatever,
will not even be considered, but
will bo returned to the sender. A
man having real grounds for ap
peal simply prejudices his case
beforehand by writing his sen
ator, representative, or to some
odicialin Washington, asking him
to uso his "influence" toward
fixing up tho exemption.
Only cases over which the dis
trict board has original jurisdic
tion; that means the cases that
originate before tho district board
and not. with a local county ex
emption board; can be appealed
to tho President.
No claim for exemption 6n the
ground of dependency can be ap
pealed to the President under nny
circumstances. The decision of
tho district board in such cases,
on which it sits a3 an appellate
board, is final and there is no
further appeal.
Miss Ruth Italston, the new
assistant teacher of tho high
school, arrived from Portland on
Saturday's stage. Miss Ralston
comes highly recommended, and
will no doubt bo able ,to filf the
position with entire satisfaction
to' all.

A Children's Fair !
A Children's Industrial Fair for
Baker county will be held at
Baker on Monday and Tuesday,
October 8th and 9th. The con
tests will be the same as usually
held for the children during the
county fair.
It was decided to hold this fair
when the county fair was given
up for this year, in order to en
courage the children to continue
their industrial and agricultural
pursuits. Premium lists will be
mailed soon to all schools and the
children are urged to send in as
many exhibits as possible.
Sam Shoemaker's son Charlie
suffered a broken leg and other
severe injuries this morning by a
horse falling on him.

end of another week. Mr. Ash
craft says: "Apparently we have
entered unon a very prosperous
year, and by the cooperation of
students, faculty and patrons, we
will make it the most successful
in" the history of the school."
Alarmed by war's destruction
through tuberculosis as well as
bullets, delegates from OregDn,
Washington, Idaho, Montana,
Wyoming and Utah have been
called into conference at Portland
on October 15 and 16. It will be
the first conference of the kind
ever held in the northwest.
