J.H- LATEST DRAFT NEWS In anawer to our inquiry aH to whom would he called from Eagle Valley on the first draft, we re ceived the following reply from A. B. Combs, Jr.: "The ony Eagle Valley people certified by the District Hoard this far arc Eli J. Stnnciu, Geo. II. Guyer, Ira W. Bradford and Alfred L. Harbor. We do not know what new rule mny be sprung on us, so am notsure who will be called for the 19th. If we take the first fifteen in the order in which the District Board certified them lo us, we will take Slanciu and Guyer on the 19th, Bradford on thu 29th, and Barber in October." A report from one of the can tonments states that the drafted mon do not light in any bed of roses. As soon as possible after arrival the men are given a thor ough medical examination, but whether the physically unfit will be sent home or not has not been ascertained. The first 1G weeks calls for 40 hours of work each week, each Wednesday and Sat urday afternood' is given the men for recreation. At the end of the 1G weeks thei men will bo well drilled in individual, squad, pla toon and company training. The training schedule includes much night work such as scouting, oc cupation of trenches, relief par ties ot troops in trenches, trench raids, construction of trenches and wire entanglements, etc. The commanders have stateo that "The men will be treated as gentlemen unless they show themselves worthy of other treat ment." All sizes. ad , .SCHOOL OPENS NEXT MONDAY The Richland public school will open Monday of next week with the following teachers: Miss Maude Hallcy. principal; Miss Maggie Dickie, fifth and sixth grades; Mrs. Ethel Brown, third and fourth grades; Miss Hazel Herr, first and second grades. It Ib the desire of the teachers that '.uircnts start all children of school age at that time instead of waiting and having them enter at n later date. A telegram received from Miss Mayme Lloyd several days ago has put the high school in a bad situation. The board has received many applications but only a few of those applying qre qualified to teach the necessary studies. As yet the position is unfilled but it is planned, to open school on Monday, and Mr. N. B. Ashcraft will handle the studies alone un til an assistant is secured. CLIMBING JP RAPIDLY Carl Barrows wiftes from Chi cago, III., under date of Septem ber 8th, as follows: "Well, I'm moving again; am on my way to Battle Creek, Mich. Have had another promotion and am now a sargent in the new National Army. Was transferred with a lot of other non-commissioned officers from the Regular Army; there is a whole train load of us, not a one but is a sargent and a great many first sargents; they represent the infantry, cal vary and artillery." Mind Deranged. H. H. Lester, a man claiming his address as Nampa and giving his age as 59, was taken into cus tody Tuesday night on account of his strange actions and yesterday morning was taken on to the cdunty seat, where he will be ex amined by the insanity board. The ojd fellow appeared harm less, but his mind is deranged on religion and poetry. He said his wife and two grown boys were at home and as they were going to buy an auto he struck out two weeks ago to earn money with which to buy a new suit, also say that he expected to find inspir ations for more poems as well as' witriess now visions. A patriotic Pythian war relief funa of One Half Million Dollars has been pledged. The Oregon domain has set aside the month of September to raise its share $8000. The slogan adopted is "One Dollar Per Member and no unwilling dollars wanted!" Throughout the United States Knights are responding to this call, and the funds will be handled by the Supreme Lodge in provid ing for our Bro'thers at the front, for their dependents at home, in taking care of sick and wounded, etc. Irvine Lodge will "do her bit" we are sure, but .let's be among the firbt lodges in the state to send in "$1 per member." On a recent visit to the John Baker ranch west of Richland we were informed by the new owner, M. H. Mulvahill, that it was his intention to pull out prac tically every fruit tree on the place and seed the ground to al falfa. This seems a sacrilege as the orchard is just in its prime, yet under the prevailing condi tions one acre of alfalfa will make more clear money for the owner than half a dozen acres of fruit; a fact due to lack of transport ation facilities, marketing organ ization, canning factory or dryer.
