Bowaro of III Rosults of
Ovcr-watoriny tho Gardon
At this tlrno of tho year and later on
through tho summer tho question of
moisture In tho vegetable garden Is a
vltnl factor In tho successful growth of
tho vegetables. All food Is taken up
by tho plimU in a liquid form, hence
wntcr muBt bo present in a proper de
gree to dissolve tho plant food and
thus mako it nvnllnblo for tho use of
tho vegetables. Quito u majority of
our vegetables aro lurgoly composed
of water and it is very necessary
therefore that they havo good quality,
thnt they grow rapidly and bo pro
duced in a soil which has a good mois
ture content, especially during tho dry
days of June. July and August.
At tho present tlrno, duo to tho
rather wet spring, there is plenty of
moisture in tho soil and it is not nec
essary for any irardener, except ho be
working on a light, sandy soil, to prac
tice tiny form of irrigation, with tho
possible exception of tho uso of water
in transplanting plants to tho gardon.
Hut for those vegetables that havo
been planted somo weeks ago, cultiva
tion is at present the most efficient
means of giving vegetables tho mois
ture which they need. Tho work of
cultivation enables tho plants to get
moisturo in the most approved way
namely, by taking it from below at tho
roots, without tho top strata of soil
being crusted or made hard.
Many gardeners get tho notion nt
the present time, because of tho dry
nppenranco of tho soil, that it is nec
essary to get out tho noso and possibly
the sprinkler and start to water tho
garden. If they exnmine tho soil care
fully, they will find plenty of moisture
two or three inches below tho dry sur
face This dry mulch at tho surfaco
is of great iniX)rtnnco in holding tho
moisture nt a depth to which cultiva
tion has bean made.
Important tools for tnklng enro of
tho cultivation efficiently and rapidly
nro tho hand hoe, tho rako and possibly
a small wheel hoe, if nvailablc. The
hand hoe, howover, can bo used to very
good advantage in working up tho soil
while the rake is especially good in
pulverizing clods and making tho
mulch fine nt the surface.
While there may bo n tendency for
many gardeners to toko advantage of
tho early morning for cultivation, so
fur as timo is concerned, yet during
these morning hours tho plants aro of
ten wet with dew, nnd henco it is not
advisablo to do much cultivation nt
Unit particular tlrno. In somo cases,
if tho work is dono early in tho morn
ing, tho plants will havo n tendency to
bo diseased ; in other cases, tho leaves
will become dirty nnd tho pores
through which tho plants broatho will
bo closed. If thero seom8 to .bo in any
way ti necessity for nutting on water,
tho irrigation should bo followed by n
good cultivation as soon as tho ground
is in suitable working condition.
' Under no circumstances should tho
garden be irrigated once it day; in
many instances not oven onco n week
unless tho soil is sandy nnd quito por
ous. Vegetables suiTor from damping
o(T, stem rot nnd other fungous
troubles whon tho ground Ib contin
uully wot and compact. This com
puctno8B must bo broken in order that
tho Boll may bo properly aerated. For
many othor reasons, therefore, in ad
dition to tho ones suggested nbovo, it
will bo seen that cultivation is ono of
tho most important factors in tho
maintenance of moisture during tho
siimmor months. Professor A. G. Bou
quet, Vegotnblo Gardening nt 0. A. C.

SUNFLOWER SEED USE
QIVEN COUNT AS POULTRY FEED
BY PROFESSOR LIPPINC0TT.
Its Qood for Moltlno Period, but Not
Practicable at Other Times on Av.
erage- Farm Too Much Fiber
and Too Expensive.
Sunflower seed becnuso of Its cost
nnd high fiber content Is not so desir
able n poultry feed as Is generally sup
posed, nccordlng to W. A. Llpplncott,
professor of poultry husbandry In the
Kaunas Htuto Agricultural college.
"In tho first place It Is too expen
sive," says Professor Llpplncott, "and
then, too, It contains u largo amount
of cnnlo fiber. It Is n good feed, how
ever, for tho molting period. The oil
seems to aid In giving gloss to the
feathers. Protein Is essential to feath
er growth nnd tho sunflower Is rich
In protein.
Dlrds for Show Purposes.
"Sunflower seed Is used by poultry
men when they nro preparing birds for
show purposes nMho feed apparently
gives tho bird n better appearance.
Showmen uso tho seed extensively as
feed but It Is not practical for tho
fanner unless tho seed enn bo bought
much cheaper than tho ordinary mar
ket price."
Oats nro better feed for chickens
than sunflower seed, In the opinion of
.Mr. Llpplncott. Sunflower seeds have
approximately 21 per cent fat content
nnd .10 per ceut fiber content, while
onts havo 1.2 per cent fnt content and
only 10.8 per cent liber content. It Is
not wise to uso oats as n feed for
chickens too extensively becnuso tho
digestive apparatus of the fowls Is not
designed to handle such a largo amount
of crudo fiber.
Best Fiber Content
Tho best liber content In a ration for
fowls Is approximately 3.5 per cent
Too much fiber upsets tho bird. If
somo feeds, low In fiber, nro used In
connecth . with onts, the fiber content
Is broiiK.it down to about the required
amount.
Meat scraps nnd mlllc aro the only
common poultry feeds having abso
lutely no crude fiber. Broken rlco has
but .2 per cent, gluten nicnl 2 per cent,
corn 2.2 per cent, nnd knfir 2 per cent

EXERCISE FOR YOUNG CHICKS
Cool Room Is Better Than Warm One
for This Purpose Avoid Lea
Weakness by Giving Bone.
Early hatched chicks should bo
given plenty of room In which to ex
erclse. A cool or sllghly cold room
Is better than n warm ono for this
purpose. It hardens tho chick nnd
thero Is little danger from chilling If
properly handled. As soon as tho
youngsters got cold they will run bnck
under tho hovers nnd warm up, then
run out again to work In tho fresh
air. Brooding In n cold room produces
stronger chicks, with better appetites.
Indoor chicks should bo allowed nc-
coss nt nil times to dried bono, small
slue. They need this to maintain
strength In tho legs; otherwise, when
closely housed, leg weakness results.
FrcBh, -green-cut bono fed In limited
quantities onco per day will ward off

HOME-PLANNING IN COUNTRY
Whole Farm Layout Should Br
Sketched and Studied Before Any
Buildings Aro Erected.
Put tho hojusc, If possible, on an emi
nence, or rise, facing cast or south
with a gentle slopo away from tho
front. Don't build too near tho road,
nor yet too far back 150 to 250 feet
will generally bo about right
Don't, don't ever put tho bnrn nnd
lot buildings In front of tho house
Tho only logical plnco for theso Is In
tho rear nnd hidden, If practicable,
by trees, vines nnd shrubbery.
Before building, glvo study nnd
tlrno to planning tho whole farm lay
out, Progrcsslvo Fanner advises.
Doing this may save many later re
grets, Tako paper and pencil, and,
with tho aid of tho family, sketch the
grounds ns they should be when the
building and planting scheme is com
pleted. It may and probably will be
years before all details of building
nnd planting arc completed, but then
thero will bo a harmonious, pleasing
whole. Aim at an Ideal and come as
near reaching It ns possible.
As never before, convenience nnd
simple dignity are the alms of house
building. A compact, well-arranged
plan Fitves steps for the housewife and
likewise building materials.
Put In plumbing nnd wiring as thp
house Is built Every live, hustling
fanner theso days should aim at noth
ing less tlmn wntcrworks, n sewage
disposal system and electric lights, or
at least an acetylene lighting system.
Make the farm homo fit Its surround
ings; the country Is no place for osten
tatious show. Multitudes of gables,
bay windows nnd vivid-tinted paints
Jar especially In country houses, be
cnuso they give an nlr of artificiality
among nature's harmonies of coloring.
Have nn opeu grass lawn. How
ever well designed nnd built a house
may be, If It has no green lawn In
front It Is Incomplete. Mako tho lawn
open and free from shrubs or flowers
except ut the borders.
Frame the whole picture with flow
ering shrubs nnd trees. Directly In
front of and near tho house Is no place
for trees however beautiful they may
be; rather place them at tho side and
towurd the back, bordering them with
flowering shrubs like tho crape myrtle,
nnd these, In turn, with banks of the
easily grown flowering annuals like
zinnias and salvia.
Put vines, preferably a hardy ever
green like tho English Ivy, over un
sightly fences, stumps and walls.
Make stately, cool avenues of the
hot, dusty lanes by bordering them
vlth pecan trees.
Lessons Learned in Sleep.
Lessons have been learned nnd dlfil
cult problems solved while In sound
slumber.
A young girl, through the death of
her father, was told that she must
leave school unless she passed an ox
imlnntlon which would entitled her to
scholarship. She studied assiduous
ly, and on one occasion carried her
school books to her bedroom, Intending
to rise early tho next day for tho pur
pose of study. In the morning, on
looking over her lessons, she was sur
prised to find thnt she already knew
them. This happened for several suc
ceeding days, when she mentlbned the
circumstances to her mother, who de
termined to watch her. This she did
and observed the girl get up as soon
ns It was light, apply herself to her
lessons, and then return to bed. When
nwnko she had no Idea of what she
had done.
Not Qualified.
"See here, you little rulllnn, Til teach
you to throw stones nt my chickens,"
shouted tho angry matron to tho boy
next door.
"Well, If you wnnt to tench me the
same method you uso when you throw
them nt my cat I'll go clsewhero for
Instruction," snickered tho llttlo ruf
thin, whoso father was a college pro-
'essor.
Not Womanlike.
"Do you see a face In tho moon,
dear?" snld tho sweet young thing.
"Yes," he replied.
"Does It seem llko a mnn or n worn
in?"
"Llko n man, tlenr. It's altogether
'oo still to bo llko a woman."
