Extraordinary Interest
We believe the following letter
written by Luton Ackerson, prin
cipal of E. V. High last year and
who is now' a student at Oxford,
will be of general interest to all:

April 24, 1917.
Dear Friend Thorp:
It has been some time since my
last note, but I have been too busy
with exams and vacation to do
much writing.
I can imagine the excitement in
America since the declaration of
war. I was a bit disappointed
that the Londoners took the news
as calm'y as they did, but no
doubt they are so accustomed now
to the idea of war that they can
not appreciate our position. How
ever, they made up for their ear
lier indifference on "America's,
Day" when the wl.ole city was
bright with thp Stars and Stripes
which fiew from poles where no
foreign flag had ever been before.
The situation throws us Amer
icans here in uncertainty. We
shall be glad when term opens
and the American Club can get
together to talk over our pros
pects. None of us shah be here
at Oxford next year. Some will
return to America; some are hop
ing thai an American contingent
will be raised in England; a half
dozen have already sailed for
home; five have already joined up
under France and England; oth
ers of the Americans have been
this year in India In Recreation
Hut Work, and some are running
Red Cross Fords in France. About
a dozen of us hai arranged to go
to India and Mesopotamia in Hut
Wrk and return to Engiand year
after ntxt by way of Yokohama
and Fri3C0, I haven't decided yet
what I shall do, at least I shall
not attend Oxford until after the
war.
I learn that hay in Eagle-Valley
has sold for $35 per ton. Wc have
some shortages here too, especial-

system by which one must signal (
the lady with the sugar each time!

Cheaper restaurants use ti sort of
unrefined sugar ranging in color i
fiom light yellow to brown-black t
strange oily stuff that crawls i
all ever itself whenever it is dis j
turbed.
Before potatoes went entirely'
oil the market they had sold fori
over 40c a pound, but now both
buyer and seller are heavily fined
when they .are, sold above the legal,
price, which I think is about 4c a
pound. In Londdn I saw many ',

closed markets-for a few pounds!

us only two" ounces of bread or

the size of meat portions; This
