T he fish w as not one of a large haul, h u t w as caught by a single fisherm an, who brought it to the fish m arket. T h ere it rem ained fo r some time, having no p u rch aser, as it was a stran g e fish and one th a t had never been seen before in those w a ters. F in ally nn Indian of th e sect called “M emen" p u rch ased it and, on th e stran g e m arkings being noticed, it was tak en to a w idely-know n A rab scholar, who, deciphered th e Inscrip tion. It w as a fte rw a rd ta k e n to the sultan, who also recognized the w ord ing. T h at night 3.000 ru p ees w as offered fo r the fish and refused, and on the following day 5,000 ru p ees w as re fused, according to Scientific A m er ican. T he original price poid fo r the fish w as 5 pice (about 3 cents) and it w as eventually decided to h av e it p re served. T h ere Is no su s picion of an y thing in th e n a tu re o f a fak e about the m a tte r and the m ystery Is so com plete th a t no explanation of the stran g e phenom enon Is forthcom ing. T he A rabic lette rin g is p erfectly plain and the discovery h as caused w onderm ent throughout the M oham m edan com m unity of Zanzibar. It w as Identified as h o lacsd th u s sem ieirculatus, Cuv. et Val., a w idely d istrib u ted Indo-Paciflc species of chnrtontldae.
