So be Ju st laid a course th e way ho thought he oug h t to ste e r and kept it up hell bent all night. Just, a fte r daylig h t he discovered thut be w as off th e Belgian coast, having croased the channel. As th e early m orning m j t lifted he sighted a big vessel astern flying the G erm an flag. S h e d id n 't look like a reg u lar w ar ship—m ore like a convert«^ yach t but a b e m ounted one gun forw ard, and C. could see o th ers aft. H e had a regulation th ree Inch piece him self. "W ell, boya,” he raid to his crew , "w e inny be re ttd n navigators, t u t we d o n 't need to know n avigation to give th a t tu b a fight. W h at do you say?" T h ere w as only! about one chance In a hundred th a t any of them would com e out of th e scrap alive, aud C. didn’t like to o rd er his m en into It. The M. T h e gun w as loaded and ready to lire, an d C. w as only w aiting for w h at he thought w as th e best position before giving th e o rd er to shoot. “ W e ought to fiy our flag if w e're go ing Into b attle," suggested som e one in th e crew. "B y Jove, y o u 're rig h t.” C, agreed, an d in a Jiffy th e B ritish enalgu w as run up a t th e M. L .’s stern. L ike a shot th e G erm an flag at the ste m of the w a r vessel cam e down, and th e Union Jack took its p'u e Sim ultaneously from the m asthead the s tra n g e r broke out a p riv a te B ritish n avy signal, aud C. replied. H e had com e w ithin nu nee of firing in to one of his own vessels which hud been flying th e G erm an flag in order to decoy any G erm an cru ft th a t m ight G erm ans are supi used not to risk U boats unduly; but. believe me, they do. I talked w ith the chief engineer and oue of th e crew of a B ritish su g ar ship from the W est Indies who had been rescued a fte r being torpedoed. "W e w ere Ju st m aking H avre,” said the engineer, “ and we w ere m ighty glad to get in. The day w as rem ark a bly clear, and the w ater was oily smooth. "T he first tw o shots fell short, and the th ird w ent over th e U boat. T he way som e people talk you would have expected th e subm arine to run aw ay. She d id n 't do an y th in g of the kind. She opened up on us w ith a gun th a t m ust have been a t least a th ree inch 1 piece, and th e second shot hit one of I our gun m ounts. "One m an disappeared—actually d is appeared. E ith e r he w as knocked Into I th e sea and sank, o r he must, have been literally blown to pieces. A noth er poor fellow w as killed—ju s t about torn In tw o —and tw o o th er men w ere p u t out cold. T h e captain had to stop then, because there w as nothing left to fight with. “ We w ere so n ear port th a t the firing m ust have been heard, and It w as al m ost certain som ething would come out to Investigate but the U boat w ent about finishing the job very m ethod ically. “The G erm an com m ander ordered us Into our bouts.
