T H U R S D A Y . J U L Y 5, 1917. A proposition has been m ade to the County C ourt by th e State H ighway Commission, th a t if th e governm ent will give $15,000 and the state $15,000 w hether this county would give $15,000 to improve the road from D»dph to Hebo. T he County C ourt decided to accept the offer, but would have to take th e $15,001' appropriated in the budget for the Little Nestucca road as th a t iu the only uion«> available to to cover governm ent and state aid th e county has on h a nd at present. T h a i does not m ean th a t the money will be taken from th e Little Nestucca, b u t will be simply a te m p o r ary arrangem ent to o btain $2 for $1 e x pended on th e Three Rivers road, it being planned to spend $+5,000 on that road this sum m e r.—Tillamook Head-- light. There is a whole lot of good reasoning in th e above editorial clipped from oui esteemed c o n tem po:ary, yet th e re is room for im provem ent. F irst, we would like to know why th e $15,000 allowed to im proving the L ittle Nestucca road is th e onlv available $15,000 th a t could be used to m atch th e sta te and federal aid. I t seems to those of th e Little Nestucca territory t h a t they are being made the goat.. Why not take it from some other road. T here is a vast country t h a t will be helped by the im provem ent of the L ittle Ne6tucca road. We will stop here and take words from the m outh of T oastm aster Shrode at th e good roads booster m eeting held on the Sour Grass last Saturday a n d see how it tits the case of the Little Nestuc- ca. He said with im proved roads the people of this vallev could haul their hay from th e W illam ette Valley and th u s perm it them to pasture more cow® on th e land here which is b etter a dapted to pasture th a n to hay raising, th u s m aking a m a rk e t for th e hav of the W illam ette Valley and helping th e m as well *as ourselves.” F u rth e r he said “ In 'fre ig h tin g cheese to main lines of railroad over a good road” th e expense Would be about half what it is n ow .” A nother speaker who said " W h a t we need is a tr u n k highway from one end of the r o u n tr to th e o t h e r ” was a p p la u d ed vociferously, showing th a t Tillamook C ounty alm ost to a m a n fhvors the tr u n k line «poken of. Logically when this tr u n k line Is built, especially is this true when it accomodates a ( r e s t Dommunity of cbese producers and hav consum ers as does th e territory tapped by the L ittle Nestucca road. So far as the Three Rivers road is concerned we want to see th a t improved as well as any oth e r road in th e c ounty and as rapidly. We also notice, how ever. th a t there is one rock c ru sh e r now a t work on th a t road and it seems to th.ise who tarried long enough to in vestigate, th a t the im provem ent on the Three Rivers road was being m ade as fast as it could be done practically. A nothe r rock crusher would be needed to hasten th e work very m aterially. Tire Three Rivers road needs to be i m proved and we w ant to see it improved, t h a t if th e state commission insist on dictating to the c ounty th e road th a t is to lead from th e main c ounty road to th e outside and they have decided t h a t t h i T hree Rivers road is the one, then ra th e r th a n to lose th e federal and state aid, we would sugge«t th a t not more th a n 12,500 be taken from 't h e Little Nestucca r ,* d , place th a t w ith the $7,00i3 appropriated to improving the th e Three Rivers r a id th u s making a total of $9,500, th e difference between th is am ount and th#$!5,000 to be taken proportionately from other road pro ject«. T he L ittle Neatucca people feel, th a t if th e 115.000 appropriated to im proving th e ir road is confiscated it will he a long and cold day before they get an a ppropriation to do th e work they m uch desire and one which they ar« justly entitled to.
