DECEMBER 14. 1916 REGULATING FOOD PRICES. Down in Australia they have an or iginal way of dealing with the food problem. There, they have a food com mission which acts much in the same way as the interstate commerce com mission in this country. If the rail roads wish to raise their rates, they must convince the commission that their desires arc justified by conditions. In Australia, food cannot be raised until the producers and consumers are heard. Then the commission gives its decision. There is no egg king in Australia. No one can corner any food and make a go of it. The food commission can reduce or raise the price of an article of food, providing there are circumstances which justify it. Butter which sells in Sidney for 36 cents a pound cannot be boosted tomorrow to 40 or 50 without the au thorization of the commission and a hearing at which dairymen, dealers and consumers are represented.
