T h e tre e s w ere spaced ab o u t 8x8 feet,
m a k in g a few leas th a n 750 trees to the
acre. T h e to ta l co st of p la n tin g was
$8.50 a n acre. T h is in clu d es cost of
grow ing th e tre e s a t th e n u rse ry and j
g e ttin g th em to th e area, as well as ac­
tu a l p la n tin g o p eratio n .
F o r sev eral y ears th e forest service
h as been re fo restin g th e treeless hills
a b o u t M ount H ebo and g ettin g very
sa tisfa c to ry re s u lts. A ccording to Mr. '
K u m m el, th e p la n rin g th is year has
been th e m ost successful yet m ade in
th e d is tric t. Not only is th e loss very
sm all, b u t th e liv ing trees grade up well
as to th riftin e ss. T his is p articu larly
en co u rag in g , as th e area is ra th e r e x ­
posed, w ith rocky soil, an d bears con­
sid e ra b le veg etation w hich m ade p la n t­
ing difficult. W h ile it is expected th a t

th e fall re p o rt on th is area will show
considerably g reater lost, as som e of th e
trees will be killed by su m m er d ro u g h t,
the p la n ta tio n gives prom ise of being
com pletely successful.
T his p la n tin g is p a rt of th e general
plan for refo restatio n w hich th e forest
service is ca rry in g out in all th e n atio n al
forest states as rapidly as funds and
p lan tin g stock are av ailab le, says M r.
K um m el. A lready 125,000 acres has
been p lan ted and th e w ork is p lan n ed
to go on each spring an d fall u n til th e
old b u rn s t h a t are not restocking u a-
turaliy and th e b a rre n areas capable of
bearing trees on th e various 253 n a tio n a
forests are p lau ted up. M ore th a n 15,-
000 acres was p la n te d in 1915.
