The c o u n ty was held to be responsible for t h e condition of th e bridge. Now a ju d g m en t for $1,300 has been won against Douglas C ounty for personal in ­ jury sustained by a passenger jolted off a stage on a bad road. The decision has been appealed to th e S tate Suprem e C o u rt. If su stained, this verdict will get a costly precedent.—Oregon Voter. CONFIDING IN THE TELEPHONE. A new use for th e trouble d e p a rtm e n t of a telephone office has been discovered, l'he S o uthw estern Telephone News r e ­ ports it in these w o r d s : The family had not had th e ir telephone very long, and everyone took a deep and abiding in tere st in it. On th e o utside of th e directory th ev had noted she words, “ Trouble, cail No. 4217.” I t h ad been a hard m orning, and e v e ry th in g had gone wrong. Finally th e lady of th e house, in desperation, t u rn e d to h er tru s ty telephone and called 4217. “ This is th e trouble d e p a r t m e n t ,” a n ­ swered th e operator sweetly. “ Is this w here von rep o rt your t r o u ­ b le s !” asked th e lady. “ Fes, m a ’a m . ” “ W ell, I only w ant to re p o rt t h a t o u r c a t got drow ned in th e cistern th is m o rn in g ; th e baby is c u ttin g a new tooth ; th e cook left w ith o u t w a rn in g ; we are out of sugar and s ta r c h ; th e stovepipe fell d o w n ; th e m ilk m an left only a p in t instead of a q u a r t today; th e bread w on’t r a i s e ; m y oldest child is com ing down with th e m easles; the plu m b in g in th e cellar leaks; we have only enough coal to last th ro n g h to­ m orrow ; th e p a in t gave out when I got only half over th e d in in g room floor; th e m ainspring of th e clock is bro k e n ; m y th ree sisters-in-law are coming to­ morrow to visit: th e m an has not called for th e garbage for two weeks; our dog has th e m ange; t h e looking-glass fell off th e wall a while ago and broke to p ieces; and I th in k m y husb an d is taking con- fideimble notice of a widow lady t h a t lives next door.
