W hen I first se t up m y sh in g le as a

aid th em , th ey k now ing very w ell th at
a n old b ird is not to be c a u g h t with
chaff.
1 h ad n o t been p ra cticin g long before
I w as ask e d one d ay to call a t a cer
tain ad d ress. 1 found a sta te ly m an
sion sta n d in g by itself. 1 w as ad m it

d re ss a n d ap p e ara n ce w as in keeping
w ith th e prem ises. l i e led m e in to a
recep tio n room a n d said to m e:

S tep p in g to a little m ah o g an y desk,
he w ro te a check a n d han d ed it to me
It w as fo r $50.
By th is tim e it began to d a w n upon
m e th a t I h ad s tru c k one of those
cases a g a in st w hich I h ad been w a rn

m y pocket. It m ig h t g et m e in to tro u

to a room w h ere a m an w as holding a
young w om an dow n on a lounge. She

him a n d w as hy sterical.
As soon ns she saw me she becam e
m ore so th a n ever. My conductor took
m e asid e a n d in a low voice told me
th a t sh e w a s in san e a n d he w as in
ten d in g to ta k e h er to a re tre a t for
such p a tie n ts. ■ She had been so vio

som e so o th in g rem edy.
I took a sm all vial from my m edi

th in g if you w o n 't poison me!”
Now, I am a b eliever In physical In

j d ep t a t in te rp re tin g them . If I see
tw o p erso n s to g e th e r w hom I don’t

tell If th e y a re of th e sam e bicod. 1
• an also tell by a person's eye w h eth er
he o r sh e is Insane. I looked into the
y oung la d y ’s eye a n d saw no evidence
of in s a n ity w h a te v er. A nother m a tte r
influenced t a e - t l i e handsom e fee 1 had
received in advance.
" D o n 't fe a r m e.” 1 said to her in a
re a ssu rin g voice. “ I am a physician,
a n d th is is a sim ple soothing d ra ft to
q u iet y o u r n erv es."
She looked a t m e searchingly and
an x io u sly , ev id en tly having felt confi
d e n t t h a t I had been brought In to
I>oison her.
” 1 d o n 't need a n y th in g to soothe me,"
sh e said , “if th e y 'll only let me go.
T hey took me from m j hom e an d
b ro u g h t m e h ere in a carriag e. They
a re going to s h u t me up for a lunatic.”
“ D rin k it,” I said, holding the glass
to h e r lips. “ It w on’t h u rt you and
w ill do you good."
I to ld h e r w ith m y eyes w hat l had
spoken w ith m y voice, and she took
th e dose.
I t w as really a help to
her in re sto rin g h er equanim ity and
lessen in g th e a d v a n ta g e h er enem ies—
if th e y w ere su c h —had over her. l e a v

for bread pills, w hich 1 handed to the
gentlem an who had m e in ch a rg e and
who never took his eyes off m e fo r a
moment. T hen I w en t ag ain to th e
young lady an d felt h er pulse.
"Good d ay ,” I said, ta k in g h e r hand
in mine. “ D on't fe a r to ta k e th e m edi

In the palm of my h an d w as th e p re

left it in her palm , she closing her
hand on it. W h at 1 had w ritte n w as:
“ I un d erstan d the situ atio n . L eave all

F rom her 1 tu rn ed to m y conductor,
to whom I said th a t he need not give
her th e modi ine prescribed u nless she
becam e violent and if she becam e very
violent before he could rem ove h e r to
send fo r me.
H e seem ed satisfied
w ith this an d confident th a t I had
either been deceived or th e fifty dollar
check had stifled any suspicions I
m ight have.
1 left the house and, going to a sto re
near by. telephoned my chum , C harlie
K now lton. w ho had gone in to law
when I w ent in to m edicine, to com e to

succeeded, though I n ev e r q u ite u n d e r

using a lot of L a tin w ords—“d e luna-
tico in quirendo." “h a b e a s co rp u s” and
all th a t—b u t I knew n o th in g of w h at
