T his cu sto m h ad prevailed in th e village of K e rn sto w n for m an y long years. T here w a s one exception to it, how ever, an d th a t w as th e case of E lder W ickshaw a n d his wife. H e had been elder of a ch u rch since a ch u rch had been e sta b lish ed in th e place, an d he had long been know n for his stinginess. T h e eld er’s w ife would have been open handed w ith th e neighbors, but h e r h u sb an d had said to her: “ I f w e h ave got an y neighbors who h av en ’t cow cum bers, onions and to m a toes in p lenty it is d u e to th e ir s h ift lessn ess and they sh an t have a n y of o u rs.” “ B u t th ey a re going to w aste.” would rep ly th e wife. “ No, th ey a in ’t. T hey will enrich th e soil fo r a n o th e r season. E ven if th ey w on’t I am no t going to eucour age sh iftle ssn e ss in anybody.” A m ong those whom he d enom inated as sh iftle ss w as Solomon G raves. lie w a s n 't ex actly lazy, b u t y et he m ight h av e had m ore energy. H e had a sm all gard en , b u t it w as hostile Soil. He p assed an d rep assed th e eld er's house m an y , m any tim es, an d a lw a y s stop ped a n d looked over the fence, but the eld er n ev er cam e out an d invited him to help him self. A t length, w hen Solo m on sa w th a t th in g s w ere going to w a ste , he d eterm in e d to help him self w ith o u t th e Invitation. H e hastened in to th e house to say to his w ife: “ M ar’ar. th e re is an u n h u n g villain in K e rn sto w n .” “Good g racio u s!” she exclaim ed, w ith a s ta r t of su rp rise. “ A nd th a t u n h u n g villain en tered our g ard en d u rin g th e n ig h t an d picked an d c a rrie d a w ay six of our choicest co w cu m b ers.” A nd a f te r a h asty b re a k fa st the elder took th e tra il so plain in th e soil and follow ed it ov er th e f^nce into th e alley an d from th ere to th e house of Solo mon G rav es, a q u a rte r of a m ile aw ay. Judge: th is w on’t do.
