w as settle d up In spots by v ery differ­
en t peoples, a n d th ese spots, now cities
o r to w n s, show th e differences to this
day. One place w ill h av e been settled
by refined people, a n d th e ir descend­
a n ts a re refined; a n o th e r will have
been settled by a rough class, a n d its
population will be rough today.
W hen one of th e se sp o ts w a s in em ­
b ry o —w e will call it E ag le b ird —its in ­
h a b ita n ts w ere no t n a tu ra lly rough,
b u t th e y w e re all men, a n d m en w ith ­
out w om en will in tim e d e g e n e ra te into
w ild beasts. No w om an w ould go to
E a g le b ird b ecau se th e re w ere no w o­
m en there. One o r tw o o f th e men
w e n t e a s t a t different tim es to m a rry a
s w e e th e a rt, b u t cam e back alone. W hen
th e g irls learn ed th a t E ag leb ird w as
ex clusively a m an tow n they in v a ria ­
bly declined to e x c h an g e refined su r­
ro u n d in g s fo r a den.
T h ere w as a to w n n o t fa r d ista n t
from E ag le b ird th a t w e w ill call L ady­
bird. W hen th e fo rm er w as settled th e
la tte r had been a tow n fo r tw o dec­
ades. T ru e, th e L ad y b ird ia n s had ru n
o u t th e In d ian s, b u t they bad all com e
to the region, m en a n d w om en to g e th ­
er, from C onnecticut, w h e re th e re w a s
a college, a n d th e re w as no t a poorly
educated person am ong them . B ut
L adybird had no t been fa v o rab ly lo­
cated for trad e, a n d its y o ung m en
w hen grow n so u g h t b u sier fields o f la ­
bor. w hile th e ir siste rs rem ain ed w here
they w ere. In stea d of m an u fa ctu res,
th ere w ere libraries, a n d the old folks
an d th e g irls w ere very intellectual.
E aglebird h ad been settled fo r a land
speculation. T en m en w ith m oney had
purchased a tra c t for a song anil se-
cured o th e rs to jo in th em in s e ttlin g it
by offering a sh a re in th e p ro p erty . In
this w ay som e fo rty m en, m ostly young
a n d all u n m arried , w ere secured a s
em ig ra n ts fo r th e en terp rise. T hey
built a tow n, b u t no m ore m en cam e,
an d ow ing to th e ab sence o f w om en
j th ere w ere no children.

th e schem e, one d ay ca lle d a m eeting
in th e to w n hall, a building 12 by 18,
used prin cip ally fo r p o k er p artie s, an d
th u s a d d ressed th e g a th e rin g :

I’ve n proposition to m ake. T h e re are

bird. E fforts have been m ade to in­

noses a t us. W hat do you say to

T he idea took like w ildfire. N a tu ­
rally, th e yo u n g est m en w ere th e m ost
en th u siastic. T h irty m en agreed to join
th e ab d u c to rs, a n d no one of th em w as
over thirty’ y e a rs old, w hile th e g re at
m ajo rity w ere not tw enty-five. This
looked w ell for th e schem e, fo r the
g irls th ey w ere to ru n off had nearly
all been born since th e se ttle m e n t of
L ad y b ird a n d w ere th e re fo re young.

T h ere w us a howl of resp o n se to this
th a t broke in upon th e ad d ress. One
m an w hose voice dro w n ed th e o th e rs
gave aw ay th e sch em e to a b d u c t th e
young L adybirds. l i e w as how led
dow n fo r doing so, since it w as to l»e
expected th a t he h ad ren d ered it a b o r­
tive. W hen som e s o rt of o rd er w as re­
sto red th e lady spoke ag ain :
“I am n o t su re b u t w h a t y o u r plan
m ay be adv isab le.”
