CLOVERDALE, TILLAMOOK COUNTY. OREGON, APRIL 13, 1916 VOL. 11. ACCIDENTAL SHOOTING W. D. Winters Meets With Fatal Acccident While Hunting. On Sunday morning an accidental shooting occurred at Slab Creek that shocked the entire neighborhood \V. D. W inter, his eleven-vear-old son and F»ed Affolter went bear hunting that morning and when a few miles from home sat down on a fallen tree to rest. This was about 10 o’clock and while in Conversation W inter’s gun, which was leaning against the tree, slipped and was about to fall to the ground. W inters grabbed the barrel near the muzzle and sharply drew it toward him. The hammer caught and discharged the gun, the charge entering his abdomen and went upward into his body. Fred Affolter suggested going tor a doctor but the wounded man realizing the seriousness of his injury, said he would be dead before a doctor could reach him. However Mr. Affolter started but lost his way and did not get out of the woods until quite late in the afternoon. The little son was'alone with his dying father. Mr. W inters attem pted to walk home and succeeded in going about fifty yards when he fell, telling his son to be a g >od boy and expressing a wish that he might see his wife before he died. The unfortunate man lived about an hour and a half after the accident. After dissolution had taken place the boy picked up his father’s gun and started for help to bring his father’s body home. f t [N e s tu c ca Fearing he could not find his way and coming to a creek that he knew IF w d close to his home he walked ankle deep down the creek, and was the first to bring the sad intelligence to his mother. Dr. Boales, of Tillamook, was called and arrived about 4 o’clock, and after gathering the facts, decided an inquest was unnecessary. The funeral took place from the church at Chetown, conducted by Rev. F. S. Ford, and was largely attended. W. D. Winters, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Winters, who reside in the valley, was born at Newberg, Oregon, Yamhill county, in July, 1881. He leaves a wife and four children—Lola, W alter, George and Alice, also a mother, father, six brothers and two sisters. The bereaved wife and family have the sympathy of the entire community.
