At one time the famous author Rud-
jard Kipling always used to pay his
bills, no m utter how small they hap­
pened to be, by cheek. After awhile
he discovered, to his amazement, that
his banking account showed a much
bigger balance than the counterfoils of
Ills check book warranted. In fact, al­
though he was drawing checks for
small amounts utmost dally, his money
st the bank did not seem to dwindle
In the least.
For a long time he was at a loss to
account for this astonishing fact until
one day, happening to visit an office
where the principal was an enthusiastic
autogrnph collector, he saw one of his
own checks framed and hanging on
the wall.
Then It was that the mystery was
solved. It appeared that the local shop­
keepers found that they could get more
for Kipling’s checks by selling them to
autogrnph hunters than they could by
cnshlng them ut the bunk, and thus it
