w ere open to foreigners. One d ay he
fell in w ith a m an d arin who had been
a good deal In E n g la n d and spoke th e
language. T he m an d arin traveled In
style, being c a rrie d lu a chair, com m on
In E u ro p e u ntil n e a r th e beginning of
th e n in etee n th ce n tu ry , by tw o m en
an d a tte n d e d by several o th er s e rv ­
ants.
W o rthington, who trav eled ou h o rse­

side th e ch air, c h a ttin g w ith him. T he
A m erican knew enough of C hina to
u n d e rsta n d th a t It w as infested w ith
robbers an d w as arm ed to the teeth.
T h e m an d arin w as a n elderly person,
u n u sed to arm s, bu t bis serv an ts w’ere
p re p are d to defend him . They w ere
arm ed w ith pikes, sh o rt sw ords and
o th e r w eapons, w hich W orthington
considered n ex t to useless In a fight
w ith an enem y pro p erly accoutered.
S uddenly w hile p assin g th ro u g h a
n arro w c u t In th e ro ad th e p arty w as
a tta c k e d by a dozen m en bent on rob­
bery. T hey w e re not m uch b e tte r a rm ­
ed th a n tho m a n d a rin 's serv an ts, bu t
they o u tn u m b ere d th e la tte r, w ho 1m
m ed iately took to flight, leaving th e ir
le is te r In th e h an d s o f th e enemy.
