Feeling responsible for th e relative

H a v in g received wtii'd that m.v urtimI-
fnther. t In* lute P rofessor Donnen-
s h unner, had died in G erm any and
had m ade me Ids heir, I w ent to his
hom e in Ileidelheig, where lie had a l
w ays lived, to settle his estate.
In
overh au lin g Ids ell’eets I cam e upon
the following etiriotis manuscript, w r i t
ten a n d sinned by the deceased:
I see this m orning by advices from
Am erica th a t an em inent scientific in
vest inn tor claims to have discovered a
serum for destroying the d estructive
elem e u t th a t produces decay, or, in
o th er words, old an*'- 1 have conclud
ed to place my grandson, to whom I
bequeath my effects, in possession of
facts to show th a t the discovery which
this Am erican now claims as original
was m ade by me som e years ago. I
shall not give the process by w hich I
preserved youth. T he reason for my
not doing so will ap p e ar from th e ex
perience 1 am about to narrate. I shall
simply give the only case which 1 a c
complished
A fter having succeeded with th e low
er anim als I n aturally sought an op
portunity to apply my process to m a n
kind
I happened about th a t tim e to
fall in with a lady who w as desirous
of m arrying a man much younger th an
herself She was F niuletu Hishoff. for-
t\ years old. and the man was Adolf
Kent nor, aged tw en ty They w ere cous
ins and heirs to adjoining estate s,
whi h would tie much enhanced in
value If they could be united. Besides
this fact. I'ratileln UlshotT seem ed to
love the young man
I told her that I had discovered a
serum by which I could keep her
young while Beutnor w as grow ing old.
It would be a long process, for it would
require tw enty y ea rs for him to a r
rive at the sam e ag e a s herself. Bent
ner, realizing th a t a m a tc h w ith his eld
erly cousin would lie to his interest,
would have gladly m a rrie d her if site
had been of a su itab le ag e for him.
T he frauleln asked m e to propose my
plan to him. which 1 did, nud he
agreed to m arry her. t r u s tin g to me to
keep her young till he had c a u g h t up
wit it her.
Tile m a rria g e w as delayed a t my
suggestion till I felt assu re d th a t my
serum w .is producing on th e lady the
effect l expected, b u t a s soon as I had
evidence of tills th e w e d d in g took
place. T h e groom im m ediately nftei
th e cerem ony set out to spend a good
deal of tim e in travel. Iieing desirous
of gettin g rid of th e Interval which
s ep a rated him from his w ife w ithout
stving her. l i e wits gone, five years.
