He in tim e wrote th a t he w as tired of a nom adic life a n d on th e day he w as forty w ould re tu rn to her and settle down. Feeling responsible for th e relative conditions existing betw een these tw o persons, I viewed th e ap proach of their real nuptials w ith solicitude, fearing som ething m ight occur to m a r t h e re sult. T h e lady who had w a ited twen- ty y e a rs for a h usband w as also get- ting a trifle anxious. 1 did w h a t I could to encourage her, bu t sh e seemed to h a v e a pre sen tm e n t t h a t w lm t she had been hoping for w ould not be realized. T h re e m onths before th e t im e set for th e re tu rn of her husb an d she had got h erself into such a s ta te of w orry th a t l found my s eru m w as not actin g properly. I told her th a t if she did not throw off h er despondency we should have a bad failure. T h is h a d a c o u n ter effect from w h a t I had e x pected. It frightene d her, a n d she lost control of herself. T h e re su lt w as a hysterical condition, which rendered my hypoderm ic injection absolutely in efl'iK'tlve W ithin a week from a wom an of forty slic bad become o n e of sixty, and. not being used to th e presence of the youth d estroying anim alctilae in her system , she had d e t e r i o r a t 'd fa r more th an she w ould have d o n e u n d er ordinary circum stances. Indeed, she w as shriveled f a r beyond tier years. T h en cam e th e most d istressin g fea tu re in tlie atVair. H e rr B eutner a r rived suddenly, full of anticipation of settling dow n w ith a com panionable vvnmi.ii as well p-eserved a s himself, and stum bled into the very room \\ here she was. Seeing an old crone, he asked her w h e re lie would find ills wife T h e poor woman, realizing the situation, pointed to a room across tlie tin 11 and as soon as he had left her locked the door.
